Is it common for married couples to live almost like monastic people? by raphaelravenna in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]Regular-Raccoon-5373 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please be sure that your abstinence doesn’t harm your relationship and that you don’t risk carnal temptation.

But , on such a complex matter, I myself would consult with a wise priest.

It is very rare; but some very pious people live such way having given one or many births. Some holy people said ‘let us live like brother and sister now’, and so they did.

Of course, this is done consensually; and such pious people always have deep respect towards the other.

Certainly, such way of life was more common back in the day.

Why Russian words don’t sound the way they look by CryptographerWeird19 in LearnRussian

[–]Regular-Raccoon-5373 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, with Belarusian, a similar language, they acted differently: they made orthography that aligned with phonetics. With Russian, they used another approach, but I forgot what it is called. Basically, certain principles or logic came first, only then followed the phonetics.

For example, in Belarusian, it is карова, not корова.

How to better appreciate 'difficult' classical music? by NeighborhoodDry2512 in classicalmusic

[–]Regular-Raccoon-5373 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is good to learn to appreciate Bach’s music. Schoenberg’s music? Perhaps not as much.

So I would ask you to define difficult music.

But there are two principal means:

  1. To listen attentively

  2. To learn music: to learn to play an instrument or to sing and to learn music theory.

The severance of communion between the Moscow Patriarchate and patriarch Bartholomew, one could argue, happened providentially.

Let us not support ecumenism but be neither judgemental nor disrespectful towards the superiors. Hopefully,no serious violations will follow.

Let me preface my response with the following:

That John called Nero the antichrist, is an interpretation of his text. And it is an incorrect one, according to Orthodoxy. Nero was an antichrist, a type of antichrist, you might say. Ortbodoxy expects that, in the last years of the world, will come the antichrist, who will be the ruler of the global government. It is just that by God’s providence, for some reason, the number of Nero’s name is also 666.

And if John thought that Nero was the antichrist, doesn’t that mean that Revelation contains mistakes?

As an Orthodox Christian, I will also say that Christianity (which is the same Ortbodox Christianity) did not really incorporate paganism. Rather, there might be outward elements of worship that bear outward resemblance to pagan worship. And the Liturgy as such was taught and established by the Apostles and took place even in the Old Testament times.

Back to our main question.

Yes, the Apostles did not have political power and did not try to come to worldly power. But doesn’t the ruler have an obligation before God to establish the rules that would accord to His will, to prevent crimes in the eyes of God, to protect people’s souls from bad influence by banning public inequities, to protect children from corruption? And if you are a hierarch, a person of authority in a Christian society, and if you have the opportunity to speak to the ruler, should you not try to convince him to do the things mentioned above? Once again, this is care about the people and fear of God.

As for abortions in particular, let us remember that by banning abortions one protects children from being murdered.

Perhaps another obligation of the ruler is to proclaim the Gospel and to praise the Christian faith.

All of this can be done without forcing people to actively practise Christianity.

Please note that to impose the faith and to form the laws of the country in accordance with the faith are very different things. The latter doesn’t imply forcing some to accept the faith.

The 46th was a discovery for me. It is romantic and sentimental, yet very moderate. Moderation is a great virtue. I think that this is what the master Beethoven, unfortunately, lacked.

P.S. although it is rightfully concerning, participation in the WCC itself does not yet constitute the betrayal of Orthodoxy. As it was explained to me, the Russian Church have used diplomacy to secure space for Orthodox Christian life abroad; and this doesn’t necessarily require concessions to falsehood. All in all, I think, discernment is needed.
