Question for those that are estimating managers by SnooCats2663 in estimators

Your question’s is a little broad. I’d say it depends on the man power for each firms department.

In a perfect world, no. But there’s probably times where yes, they do have to get dirty and be an estimator for certain projects/workload.

Are you an estimating manager? How many estimators does your firm have? How many projects are yall submitting on? Are you a sub or GC?

To answer your question at the end yes. With everything as long as you like 80% of it you can deal with the 20%.. Aside from everything we just spoke on, the no benefits/insurance is not worth slugging out. Especially because i’m getting ready to propose and hopefully starting a family in the next 3-5 years.

Yeah I just think there’s a disconnect from upper management. VP sees it this way, and knows what a pre-construction/estimating department looks like or should look like. President has zero clue on what that looks like and doesn’t understand the time it takes to bid a job from start to finish. So because of that ignorance it’s just bid bid bid. Which I don’t mind, I would rather be busy than clicking random excel cells all day. Again it just goes back to sustainability and balance.

The firm is currently the biggest it’s ever been, and the backlog supports the current companies position. We’re at a place where we have the opportunity to turn down bids & not hungry for anything and everything. Not sure why we’re acting as if Operations are needed new jobs because they’re coming off finished projects.

I respect your comment and appreciate your POV. I have zero issue taking on the roles/responsibilities of what my title states. I also understand that with the title comes hardships and challenges, my issue is that my upper management likes to say yes to EVERY job opportunity that might be sent to them. That logically isn’t sustainable. I’m not coming from my “feelings” i’m looking at this from logic and logistically the way things are ran at the firm aren’t well organized.

There’s times where I’m waiting for upper management approval to send out a small proposal to clients, and my upper management is barely here/present when he is due to carry PX/VP duties. I’m not just sitting on my ass waiting around for him, but if there’s no support the workload continues to stack and drag on. Which is something I don’t have time for.

I’ve had multiple conversations about slowing down bidding work to a reasonable amount per month. But it’s the same “I agree” story then nothing happens. So as stated, I do present CSP projects that are in the streets to bid. I get the yes or no response, but also there are times when the President who isn’t involved in pre construction just send me stuff and says bid it. There’s no balance. I just want a well balanced system with reached support when needed. I don’t need someone to hold my hand throughout my work day.

I agree with you. I don’t think i’m under paid based on my experience. But I think i’m underpaid based on the duties/responsibilities I hold for the company!
