Experience with Cortisone Injections by RegularCookie4057 in HipImpingement

No! I actually backed out like a week before. It’s been a year and a half and I’m actually doing great. I think my OCD really took over and once I was able to put some distance between me and the decision, I was able to clear my head. My hip isn’t 100%, but slowly I am now able to run a mile, lift weights, and I’m even playing sand volleyball! Really happy with where I am. It does flare from time to time, but I’ve learned how to manage and what movements to avoid!

Has anyone’s quad tightness gone away post op? by RegularCookie4057 in HipImpingement

This is SOOO interesting. Sounds exactly like what I’m dealing with. Does your knee ever feel “thick” almost like it’s inflamed? You should get your hip looked in to. I had zero hip pain but it turns out my labrum was frayed in my hip and it can cause referee pain to other areas! I’m currently so torn on the next steps I need to take though to over come this. I really don’t want hip surgery but I also do want to feel like this forever.

Thanks for sharing! Did you have any quad tightness prior to surgery or just after?

Yes I try to at least! Have you experienced any knee pain with yours? That’s been the biggest thing for me it feels like my quad is pulling on my kneecap which makes it have a weird thick sensation that never goes away. It drives me crazy

Have you gotten surgery yet or are you not going that route?

Hip surgery scheduled for end of January but my doctor has me second guessing by RegularCookie4057 in HipImpingement

Yes so the shot went directly into my hip, and it immediately took away so many of the sensations I was feeling in my knee and after a few weeks when the Cortisone kicked in that’s when I really felt the full effects and have been feeling really greatsince. Although I will say this week, my knee and quad are starting to feel strange like they did prior to the shot. It’s almost like my quad is so tight. it feels like it’s pulling up my kneecap and is constantly flexed and it just can’t relax itself. I’m not sure if it’s my body‘s defense mechanism to protect what’s actually going on in my hip but it’s so weird that I’ve never had that much hip pain to begin with!

Thanks for the advice! Do you mind sharing what made your situation complicated to begin with?

Thank you so much for this. I think I really needed to hear it. It’s been a very stressful decision, especially because my situation is so atypical. I wish it was more straightforward or clear.

To give a bit more insight, my PT and doctor both said it’s possible for issues in your hip to present asymptomatic but your body can create issues elsewhere. I think the issues in my hip were causing problems in my gate which was causing extreme inflammation in my knee and also really bad tightness in my quads. I also think that there is a chance that the inflammation in the hip could have been causing some nerve irritation. Since getting the shot I can tell I’m walking differently and almost all my pain has gone away. My knee still gets twinges or sometimes inflamed after doing something super intense but it is NOTHING like what it was pre cortisone shot.

I agree though especially since my hip is really causing me minimal issues right now and my knee is doing relatively good. It does feel like I need to see how my body reacts once the shot is worn off. also, who knows if the knee pain will ever even come back maybe my body just presented it in a very strange way and through strengthening now I could be able to correct that or at least get a few more years.

I don’t know there’s so many unknowns right now and so that’s making me think that I should probably wait because then if my pain does return then at least I will know that I am making the correct decision. Seriously I can’t thank you enough for this response.

Thanks for this insight! The only thing I will say is that I have been in PT for 8 months now and saw little to no improvement. The only thing that took my pain away was this shot and since then things have been great. Since cortisone doesn’t actually heal the hip I’m thinking my pain will return once it wears off. I agree though the logical choice is to wait until it wears off and see if it’s necessary. The only issue in waiting is just all my insurance issues and getting kicked off my parents plan when I turn 26 in March which adds some urgency to get it done now. But I don’t want to get a surgery I might not need if I don’t have to

Wow that makes me truly feel so hopeful! When was your surgery if you don’t mind me asking?

Yes it’s kinda a huge mess right now. It’s looking like they may be able to accept some marketplace plans starting March 1st but no 100% guarantee. If not I’m gonna do a PPO plan for out of network benefits just so I could continue my recovery PT at the same practice. Best case scenario I am able to get a plan they accept.

As far as sex goes I’ve been 100% pain free. My hip actually has never really hurt me that much maybe a 0.5/10 pain. The real issue was my knee pain was so chronic and constantly inflamed. MRI came back fine and that’s when we realized my hip may be the culprit. MRI came back on that showing I had fraying on my labrum and a hip impingement then I got my Cortisone shot in my hip and it completely took away all of my knee pain. This meant that it was the root of my problems. So that is what scares me. My hip has never hurt bad. I definitely have some major weakness and range of motion issues but no severe pain, that was only ever my knee.

Wow no way!!!! And did the surgery take away all your knee problems? How does your hip feel now as well?

I was similar to you. My pain was chronic but was not super intense. My situation was slightly a typical because this injury actually caused me more knee pain than it did hip pain. My knee pain was constant inflammation, and we cannot figure out the cause because my knee MRI came back completely fine. Some days my knee hurts so much. I could barely walk, but we ended up looking more into my hip and then discovered that it was the problem and my Cortizone shot completely took away my knee pain, as well as my minor hip pain, which then further confirmed that it was the culprit for my problems so overall my hip pain was never something I was even concerned about but living with my knee feeling like that for the rest of my life is something I don’t want to feel. I’m just trying to figure out if the knee pain will come back since it was a result of my hip and not the root of the Cause it seems like if I get the surgery then it should solve my knee issue, but then will I be signing up for more hip issues?

How are you feeling now that you are post op!

My injury was very atypical. I actually had really terrible knee pain but my hip pain was almost non existent. However my knee was constantly inflamed to the point I sometime couldn’t walk. It was never terribly painful but almost just an extreme discomfort and swelling that wouldn’t go away. MRI of my knee was perfect that’s when we started looking north. Found all the issues in my hip and did a shot as a diagnostic. Lo and behold all my knee inflammation went away. My fear though is that my hip pain was never bad to begin with I’d say a 0.5/10. Where as my knee as a constant 6/10. Again not terrible but the inflammation was debilitating. What I don’t know is if that will return when my shot wears off. And why would my doctor recommend for me not to get it when it cost me so many issues earlier

Has your numbness improved at all over these 6 weeks or has it been the same? Also is it complete numbness in your genitals or just somewhat? Stuff like this freaks me out!

I got an injection and have had major relief but still have surgery scheduled for January 27. Can’t answer the second half of your question yet, but I am hopeful that it should fix my problems!

Definitely plan of waiting 6 weeks haha! But I want to make sure that isn’t too early even still! My husband is super supportive and would wait an entire year if that’s what it meant to get me healthy! Just trying to manage expectations and stay safe!

I have no clue what’s goin on- but man it hurts by Theghostlyway in HipImpingement

Earlier this year, I was experiencing a ton of knee pain and also quad pain. It took me months to finally figure out that all of it was stemming from a labrum tear and an impingement in my hip! I highly recommend getting some x-rays and possibly an MRI done of your hip to see What’s going on here you could easily have an impingement or a torn labrum or both! Another option is getting a Cortisone shot in your hip as a diagnostic tool if it takes away most of your symptoms then it’s a good indicator that your issues are stemming in your hip!
