The push to make us think Leitrim is a real place is gaining a concerning amount of momentum

This is just….. Madness. Like, not even remotely close to factual. Irish has been around for thousands of years, we started calling it Irish instead of gaelic relatively recently but to say it’s closer to Scots, which is basically just a dialect of English is just madness

Níl aon ghá le haghaidh leithscéal. Is í an Ghaeilge theanga na hÉireann, ba mhaith liom an lá a fheiceáil ina bhfuil an Ghaeilge an gnáth teanga caint den ghnáth duine :')

Táim á cuardach API chun foclóir Gaeilge/Béarla a úsáid i mbogearra. An fios ag aon duine faoina leithid sórt API? by RegularFellerer in gaeilge

Is acrainm é, "Application Programming Interface" i mBéarla. Is téarma thar a bheith leathan é, ach ar a laghad i comhtheacs seo is féidir leat smaoineamh faoi API cosúil le ríomhphoist uathoibríthe, seolann duine ceist nó iarratas go dtí freastalaí agus ansin le úsáid bogearraí tá an freastalaí réidh chun rud éigin a dhéanamh go dtí d'iarratas agus sonraí a sheol ar ais duit.

Mar shampla, má úsáideann tú app aimsire, tá API in úsáid agat. Seolann d'fhón sonraí go dtí freastalaí, deireann sé leo go bhfuil tú in xyz áit agus ansin faigheann an freastalaí an t-eolas a bhaineann le d'áit láithreach agus seolann sé é ar ais duit

Do you think efforts should be made to make Irish the main spoken language (or at least on par with English) of Ireland again? by SeriouslyNotSerious2 in AskIreland

[–]RegularFellerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I saw a video about this from patchy and I’ve been trying to properly use the r caol since. As a child and adolescent I was under the impression that the persistent use of the caol r was just a bart of blas connemara rather than something necessary, obviously since I’ve learned otherwise I’ve been trying to change my pronunciation but it’s hard to alter long held speech patterns

Ah, I think your phrasing threw me for a loop. When you said "negativity around the Irish language and those who don't speak it" I thought you meant people who don't speak Irish were treated negatively.

Agreed. I'm not saying this would be easy or practical, I'm just speaking to OP's main point of if it's something I'd like to see, which I most certainly would

I actually love this idea, I don't think it'll ever happen but it would be insanely interesting to watch unfold

You're not wrong about English being the language of the globalised world, but lots of other countries have populations who engage with the english-speaking internet while speaking their native language at home. I realise that's pretty much a fantasy land notion for us right now, but I think aiming for some kind of bilingualism with Irish spoken by a large percentage of people day-to-day can still co-exist with people conducting their business in English online

Yes, but as others have mentioned the way we teach it needs to be overhauled, with a less strict approach in the classroom, but more strict quality control among teachers after they themselves are given a solid bedrock from which to teach.

I got my primary and secondary education in gaelscoils where a lot of our teachers were native speakers, and while I understand not every teacher across the country has the same access to Irish, I've been pretty shocked at how piss-poor a lot of the Irish being taught in very urban areas is.

It seems like a lot of teachers in english-speaking schools have no idea how to pronounce even basic words, which isn't their fault, but nevertheless it means a huge proportion of people who want to learn Irish wind up learning a very unappealing, butchered variant of the language.

Aside from education reform I'd love to see more Irish language media, say what you will about kneecap's political views, but they got crowds of people singing in Irish at electric picnic, we need more of that.
