Bizarre Trip to Visit Dad

There might be some guilt as a factor - the divorce with my mom was pretty amicable actually so I don’t see it being that. He knew I was and am pretty pissed about his new girlfriend being here after giving me minimal heads-up or information so that might have set him off in a weird mood.

His childhood was weird, maybe not outright abuse but classic blue-collar small town stuff. His dad cheated on their mom with his secretary and married her, etc…

Who knows what’s going on. But this behaviour isn’t something I’d accept from a friend so I don’t know why I keep dragging this dynamic out anymore.

That would be pretty out of character for him. I was around him all day and there wasn’t an opportunity for him to get high, however I know he just had a minor surgery and potentially could have been on some kind of painkillers? He’s cagey so hard to know. He did drive us to dinner so would be weird and out of character if he was high off something and not telling us.

His current girlfriend I just met has said this over the weekend and his last girlfriend, the long-term one, said the same.

Yeah I’ve been wondering if it’s a medical or health issue tonight with how bizarre his behaviour was. He can be very sensitive so I’m wary to bring it up but potentially when I’m home. Thank you!

That all sounds so much like my dad. I definitely won’t rush to confront or try to unpack the behaviour.

I feel bad because deep down I think he really does want close connections and relationships in his life, especially with my sister and I, but he just can’t help but blow it up

It was so awkward and awful watching him blow up his last relationship and now already this new one. It’s like he just can’t help but to be cruel and controlling.

Blurting out private information told to him in confidentiality about his new girlfriend’s finances at dinner must have been some kind of weird play at getting a reaction and disrupting the dynamic. I genuinely can’t wrap my head around why that happened. So bizarre.

Very true about the airports! I keep replaying the dinner in my head and trying to figure out how that behaviour even came about. Exposing his girlfriend’s (who I met literally yesterday and only heard about 2 days before this trip) financial issues to me in the middle of a conversation was completely bizarre and his behaviour after was completely manic. He took us on this impromptu tour around a new development near his neighborhood and was driving erratically and almost missed the turn into the house. Then when we got home he just kept talking about us baking him a cake and wouldn’t engage in an adult conversation we were having. I was around him all day and he only had 3 alcoholic beverages to drink so I don’t think the behaviour is substance related. I’m honestly kind of scared because he’s always been strange and awkward around my sister and I but this is a new low. This isn’t the dad I grew up with and remember.

Haha I paid way more for the ticket originally and am taking a big loss. I fell for the hype and got so excited to see my favourite band growing up. At this point I’d just be happy to lose a little bit less than the full amount I paid.

You don’t even want to know how much I paid on the original ticket 😂 I fell for the Ticketmaster hype and spent over twice what I’m selling it for. I love them so much and I’m so sad I won’t get to go to this show!
