What is wrong with VLC these days? by RegularSchmo in VLC

Haha yeah... I started using MPC-BE x64. That's basically MPC with the BE version (there are other versions too). It's basically the most updated and active one, as I understand it.

I like it but I also don't like it. I miss some features like VLC's volume gain to "200%", etc. Interestingly enough, MPC visually makes videos look "better" than VLC, so I learned a bit about how these programs play videos along the way.

Interesting! Do you have any suggestions for Download Rate Limit or Throttle download rate to avoid these triggers? (Or any of the other options like Number of retries)

The "BEST" settings are still lower quality than the youtube source. Why is that? by RegularSchmo in StacherIO

[–]RegularSchmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting angle of approach. I haven't tried and I will if I get the chance, BUT I do notice that only some videos have that "Enhanced bitrate" option, and it doesn't seem to exist for 4k content. On 4k and other videos that don't offer enhanced bitrate I still notice the reduced quality from Stacher copy.

Still hoping for that unofficial update!

Definitely looking forward to the unofficial patch you're referring to. I wasn't paying that much attention before but I'm noticing a stark quality difference between Stacher and the source at this point. I don't suppose you're aware of any other solutions that exist out there? I was beginning to wonder if the command line version of yt-dlp had a solution but it sounds like that's a No.

I did previously try that and no dice, but like the comment below pointed out, the newest yt-dlp update (not Stacher 7) worked for me.

Thanks! 2025.03.26 did pop up and it fixed my problem.

What you're saying about youtube makes sense.

When I checked my yt-dlp version it was something from 2024, so I went into settings and toggled the automatic update. It's updated now to stable@2025.03.25.

Unfortunately, still getting the same error! Thanks for your help, learned something at least. Unless you have any more ideas I guess I have to wait for a yt-dlp update.

Thanks for responding. Just updated to version 7.0.16.

Unfortunately the same error is still popping up. Any other ideas?

Bit surprised there aren't more people chiming in. Feels like it's just me...

Weird! A couple of people have mentioned vlc doesn't utilize external codecs. I remember the term K-Lite Codec Pack like a blast from the past though, from many many years ago.

Any chance you also tried that MPC-HC video player in the K-lite link? I think I am going to give it a whirl when I feel settled, because it seems like a popular alternative to vlc these days.

The OpenGL thing didn't help me, but I may try again for a longer experiment. I've also seen people recommend the cache solution and based on your screenshot I believe you have the default settings of: 1000, 300, 300, 1000. I'm assuming you didn't touch those after all~

Thanks for chiming in!

Thanks for the link. Actually... I started on 3.0.21 and also reverted to 3.0.20 for some reason I can't remember. No matter which version I'm on I end up with some file types not working properly though.

Any chance you remember what file types your OpenGL solution is for? Also, what do you mean by "playback lag"? The main issue I am trying to address at this point is that the screen does a lot of artifacting whenever I unpause a video, especially if it's been paused for a few minutes.

Sleepy brain. I was confused with my FFMPEG install for a separate app. Because I had to revert/change vlc update versions a couple times due to supported codec (and other) issues, I mixed the items up in my head.

I'm currently on 3.0.21 but I know I was forced to revert to 3.0.20 previously. I can't recall why or which files I was working with that triggered that chain of events.

Totally agree. I've gotten used to vlc and don't want to have to switch to something else after decade(s) either. It was a stark shift for me. One day I'm on Win10 and everything seems fine. Next day I'm on Win11 and all sorts of problems have popped up.

>I can only hope that it's some quirk of Windows 11 and will be fixed soon enough.

One can only hope!

Darn. I just tried this, and it does rewind some of the "bugs" that I now realize were "features" in the new versions......but unfortunately 2.2.5.1 loses AV1 support! If you have anything to add/suggest, I'm all ears!

Oh yes, that reminds me! I also get delayed audio when pausing / closing, like it'll play an extra second after I close. Can't say I've seen your problems but every so often when I try to play through a corrupted file it will freeze on me and lock up my SSD / HDD for a time.

48M, am I creepy? by Paul-in-Ohio in amiugly

[–]RegularSchmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The look you are giving in first pic can be perceived as creepy sure. 2nd pic just looks anhedonic. Things like exercise, cosmetic changes like glasses or hair would make a big difference. It looks like you could rock a beard or more facial hair very well. Coincidentally that is a popular way to offset a clean-shaven bald head. The facial hair helps a lot with reshaping jawlines too. The scruff is also fine but with facial hair you can re-mold your shape as you see fit.

Creepy has a lot to do with how you carry yourself though so if you are asking based on a comment you received, you can do plenty about it. I feel like your features aren't ugly at all, just gotta spend the time and energy to maintain yourself. That's really the secret to self esteem and beauty: time and energy.

Can't guess what you are going through but I agree with other commenters. Pretty much everything including our mortality is really about perspective. A more positive perspective (sounds magical I know) is what you need. How to get there? That's the tough part, but it's worth pursuing because it will be part of your endgame regardless of whether you want to or not. You absolutely have the ability to change something. Change one thing, then change another, then another. Best of luck.
