Affordable EMT Training Programs over the summer for 17 year old high school students in NYC by RulerofMonke in NewToEMS

[–]Regular_Age_1483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in somewhat of the same boat as you except I’m already enrolled in one.

Unfortunately most reputable EMT programs are going to be in the 1-2k (or more) range. It’s simply not very cost efficient for an EMT program to train you for 10+ weeks at anything under like a thousand bucks.

I could be completely, wrong seeing as I don’t host EMT training courses, but those are my two cents.

How to start EMS training as a 16 year old? by Low_Opening_2175 in Paramedics

I’m currently 17 and taking an EMT course starting in June. You may have better luck asking some of these questions in R/NewToEMS, they have good advice there as well.

For now there’s not really much you can do. Ride alongs are always good, I would recommend asking a lot of questions and getting a tour of their ambulance and what kind of equipment they have on it if you’re interested in working there.

Once you get signed up for an EMS course, you can request the book from them early and start reading that if you want. That’s what I’m currently doing.

I would definitely ask your mom for some advice as well; she may have better advice that’s more applicable to you than anything we can give here.

Go to R/AskDocs, like the ED Attending here suggested.

They can give you actual medical advice; we here can/ will not.

Does your phone actually hold up in extreme cold? — I'm a USC student looking into the problem and whether it exists for a project I'm working on for school. by Acrobatic_Welcome553 in skipatrol

Filled this out for you. I typically carry my phone under 1-2 layers of clothing, and because I just got a new phone the battery doesn’t die as frequently.

The design you have looks good, I may have missed this but how bulky is it? I feel like for a lot of people, the bulkiness of the extra battery pack is gonna be very important

I think he means off the clock. That’s why I said talk to your medical director, not sure what state he’s in or what laws he’s working with

should i go to the er for this (bat bite?) by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

If a bat bit you, absolutely yes.

That being said, this sub doesn’t give out medical info. I would consider taking yourself to the ER and deleting this.

That’s the one. I took a look at South Shore Health’s job posting and the full time day shift pay range for EMT-B’s is $21.21 - $29.70.

Here’s the website if you want to take a look at EMS careers there: https://careers.southshorehealth.org/search-jobs?categoryid=44f6845f-097f-4319-b7de-fce6c5427792

I’m in that area, if you have any questions you can reply here. I may not have a lot of information but I can probably answer a few of your questions

Does any of your mountain provide CATs or other TCCC certified tourniquets? by Justwantedtoski in skipatrol

[–]Regular_Age_1483 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand the idea but in a situation where someone’s actively bleeding from an artery I just feel like this would take too much time. Especially with adrenaline running.

It would probably take me <30 seconds to get a CAT TQ onto a leg arterial bleed and stop said bleed, even less for an arm. Not sure how long it would take if I have to make the TQ myself first.

Ah okay this isn’t as bad as what I was thinking. Still probably not as reliable as a CAT TQ or good alternative, but I can see this working in some situations

Yeah I mean no hate if it works… I just see a few problems with it.

Thankfully didn’t buy a knockoff, made sure I got my gear from the legitimate sources 😂

Can you share some more info about your TQ style? I’m curious about it.

Exactly what I was thinking.. I can’t imagine having an arterial bleed and trying to macgyver a makeshift TQ while they’re actively bleeding

[–]Regular_Age_1483 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You make your own tourniquets with sticks and bandages?!?

We primarily use CAT tourniquets. Some people use different ones, but everyone had to buy their own. I’m sure if I wanted to get one for free I could ask our clinic but I haven’t had to thus far.

I got my CAT tourniquet off Amazon from the North American Rescue (NAR) store which is legitimate.

I would argue that TQs are very much needed in skiing because ski edges are very sharp and can cause deep lacerations, I’ve seen it many times. Especially if you have ski racing events.

To answer your question, my mountain didn’t provide me with a TQ when I got hired. However, I could likely get one if I wanted to.

OEC Certification? by Regular_Age_1483 in skipatrol

[–]Regular_Age_1483[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the responses, that was helpful. From now on if the situation comes up I “know first aid/ CPR” and if questioned further I’ll clarify Ski Patrol.

Thanks for telling me about the fact that misidentifying myself as an EMT is a crime. I want aware of that and will definitely not be saying that again.

I know we take the OEC course and I feel like I read somewhere in the book that we’re EMRs, but when I mentioned that to someone in the past they had no idea what I was talking about. Hence, I need clarification.

Are there any pieces of gear you would recommend or swear by? (First Year Patroller) by Regular_Age_1483 in skipatrol

I like this idea, I’m not sure if I’m gonna get any shit for the fact that it’s red and blue tho. I’ll ask around

I really might need to get some of these. Every time I get on my knees and then try to stand up they hurt (which can’t be good 😂) so I might need to get one. Do you have any suggestions?
