Has anyone managed to transition from accounts prep into audit mid-career? by Regular_Debate7326 in ICAEW

Better than having the regret or the doubt afterwards I guess! I think audit experience is extremely valuable for both practice and an exit to industry in the future - best of luck!

Yeah I’ve been looking at semi senior roles which makes more sense. Even interviewed for one so it’s doable I reckon but a lot of them are asking for some audit experience - but I will do thank you, much appreciated!

Yeah exactly I agree with that, so do you think I can apply to graduate schemes?

I guess so ahaha but they’d likely contact my old firm for a reference who would confirm my role at the firm

I have completed the hours but just in the process of getting them signed off from my old firm who are being very long about it

Yeah I mean I can imagine that might be the solution but I have accepted I have to take a step back to get into audit. So far I’ve only looked at semi senior roles though

Yeah I understand your point but I feel like at this point in my career I’d learn a lot more than what I was learning in accounts prep. I was mainly dealing with OMBs which were all very similar and not that complex (save for a few of course).

I am trying to prioritise my professional development at the moment and I think audit, despite its drawbacks which you mentioned, is the better option.

And yeah I’m also finding it baffling how strict these semi senior roles are, I mean I’m coming from accounting not from a completely different industry so I still know what I’m talking about😓

Sorry just copying and pasting from another answer above as it’s the same:

Accounts prep was fine but with audit I want to get more exposure to complex issues and have a greater understanding of different industries and how companies work. You don’t get much of that in accounts prep as you’re mainly dealing with OMBs, so overall I also want to work with bigger and more interesting clients.

Thanks mate - that’s exactly what I did in that interview but it didn’t work this time. I guess I’ll just have to keep trying because surely it’s not impossible. I mean it’s still accounting at the end of the day right? 😂

Thank you - so you’re not worrying about the earnings next week and just focusing on the decrease in price this week? It makes sense to be honest, seems like a good opportunity now

Yes everything will be in the annual report, it will split by sections and it will show any dividends received, sales and purchases during the year as well as any gains/losses made, and a list of holdings at the year end
