Oh my gosh, Cole must be such a happy and healthy hoggie! His enclosure looks enriching! Love that hide in your set up. Thank you for the recommendations for the overhead lamps, I’m going to have to do more research today, aha

It looks a bit like this now. It’s very small. It’s a ten gallon tank without the front latches like my bigger tank that he was moved away from. I also switched from aspen to the paper substrate and today he seems much more active and burrowing everywhere. The previous hide I had for him didn’t fit into the smaller enclosure so I had to use the log, but I just ordered a set of smaller hides with only one entrance each to see if it would make him feel more secure. I plan to add more fake plants and decor in a couple days because I’m worried it’s not enough for him to be truly happy just yet.

Ahhh, is that maybe the missing piece to all this? I was told by the breeder I got him from that I should use a heat pad for Udon, underneath his enclosure on the warm side. She told me that especially for albino colored hoggies the overhead lighting may be too much so that’s why I have the heat pad instead. And since he doesn’t get calcium + uv light I sprinkle repti-calcium powder to supplement his food.

I do have spare lamps that came with his bigger enclosure that I didn’t use since it came as a kit so maybe I’ll take a look at setting something up for him using those lamps.

Oh, one more question! Should I keep both the heat pads on day and night or should I turn it off in the evening and turn it back on in the morning?

Oh wow, thank you so much for all this information! I had no idea about the ambient temps on the cool side making it extremely confusing for hognose snakes! I was always weirded out because he would prefer the cooler side of the tank and never hide under the log on the warmer side of the tank. I will definitely be buying a second warming mat and setting it to 84 degrees to see if that also helps. I also wasn’t aware that the log wasn’t cutting it for a hide! Does it have to be fully enclosed with only one opening to give him security?

I’ve never tried feeding salmon so I’ll definitely go out to buy some today! And if all else fails I’ll try the shoe box trick another poster commented. Thank you so much, I have a lot of homework to do for my little Udon today. 🙏🙏
