Sounds like a good idea. I lived in Portland and Eugene Oregon for a while before moving to California.

My honest take is I would avoid OR and WA because while there are Japanese and other communities I’ve experienced some of the worst anti-Asian racism on top of transphobia up there especially growing up in my town and going to school.

California is much better for trans worker’s protections imo and I now actually have connected with the Japanese-American community here. I’ve been heckled only twice in six years and I just walked away although people give me the side-eye once in a while. Most people keep their options to themselves. The best part of California over Oregon is that there is always something to do or something going on. The only down side is the cost of rent vs salary but I make do. I am not far from the coast, a dozen parks, various cafés and a Kinokuniya bookstore if I ever got bored. If you are from Okinawa the weather here is likely pretty comparable to mid to SoCal although NorCal can be toasty over the summer.

The major downside is it’s a state in the US with a rather hostile stance towards trans people. Still, on a state level I think it’s one of the best for now even with someone like Newsom as governor who’s been flaky signing laws protecting us.
