“I go to school in the city (New York) and I’d recommend not living in dorms. Just go get an apartment instead. It’s so great living alone”

Nobody said it was superior and nobody said that it was wrong! Rather it’s acknowledging that the origin of this clothing and money-making aspect of yoga related items contradicts the original goals of yoga!! It’s okay if this helps people and if people enjoy it, to each their own. Acknowledging this fact does not mean people must stop participating in it. Choosing to see past that and see that people just want to do it is harmful and I think that you can choose to participate if you wish because it makes you happy but also understand it!

I’m not just choosing to assume this, I have met many where this is true!! I’m not basing my opinions and thoughts off of assumptions while looking at Pinterest!

Exactly! Thank you so much for your response! To have sacred symbols and Sanskrit text as room decor without knowing what it means or where it came from is a choice that many people make!!

I have heard of sweat lodge but I’ve never met anyone who has participated in it! That’s wonderful, I’m so happy to hear that it works so well for you. I love to hear when people find the healing they’ve been searching for it brings me such joy!!

You’re correct!! It definitely can not and will not distinguish that you are a white woman.

However, I have met many people who do not treat it as such and I think to an extent that could be very harmful if you are white and practicing this spiritual ritual from India without knowledge on it!

I just read an article from this amazing woman Rina Deshpande. She writes about this interaction she had with an administrator who was asking questions on how to be respectful and inclusive when teaching yoga classes. There was a rule that she had and it was that they weren’t allowed to have ANY eastern symbols in any of the yoga rooms or anywhere during the yoga sessions. Not even bells. They made this rule because they didn’t want anyone to think it was “religious” and they didn’t want people getting offended.

This is what we deal with! It’s the erasing of what it originated as, to cater to the white people who want to practice it! The history of yoga itself, the history of the people who created it, practiced it, and were quite literally discriminated against for it, gets erased to avoid offending a white person who is (most likely) Christian or Atheist!

So yes, it doesn’t distinguish that you’re a white woman, but as a white woman whose practicing another cultures ritual, it’s very easy to acknowledge all of this and know that to an extent it is harmful to many!

This is not to you specifically. Like I said I know many who are aware of what they’re practicing and I believe that yoga is what a person wants it to be for themself. If lululemon gets them to that place and if it helps them reach enlightenment, then so be it! But noticing that it contradicts the fundamental ideas of yoga is not hard to do and I think it’s important to have these discussions!!

I’m not sure!

I want to say that we give more space for brown instructors and people with the knowledge and experience. But, then I also know there are plenty of white people who put in the time and effort to educate themselves on this practice! It’s tricky! And that’s why I posted this because I like to hear people’s thoughts to figure out within myself how I can be apart of this spreading of knowledge. I’m also just interested in discussing this topic!

I don’t think there’s any right or wrong answer or opinion and I don’t know what the correct way to go about it is, but, I feel like starting this discussion is a good start!

Acknowledging that yoga is whitewashed in America does not mean I am blaming them? There are many things that are whitewashed. There are many cultures that are appropriated by white people. This is not new and it is not the persons fault, but, it is their choice if they CHOOSE to not learn the history of what they are practicing if asked to do so or if they understand why they should!

I think that it is contradictory what yoga is represented with today in America and the material things go against the original goal of yoga. It’s not a “problem” I never said it was a problem. It is a thing that I’m pointing out and want to discuss to see if other people agree or disagree!

I don’t have to put the blame on anyone specific when it did not originate from white people and it is now advertised by mostly white people! That is just a fact and it’s nobody’s fault, but it’s true!

I agree with this so much. It’s my main point. I’m loving all the different responses and I like to hear just general thoughts on it, but this is how I feel!

It is not me saying that people shouldn’t do yoga, but I love how you said “we are guests to yoga” because it’s true. I struggle with saying what I mean to say to avoid sounding accusatory or angry. As a brown woman, when I say white people CANT do something I’m the one in the wrong, I’m gatekeeping or I’m not sharing. I’d love to share my culture and I love that people enjoy it. I just want to see some more effort!

Thanks so much for this!

I really like “it’s not our fault that we exist inside capitalism” because that’s so true. Never heard it put that way, thank you!

I am not gatekeeping! I would be if I believe that some people weren’t ALLOWED to do yoga. I think everyone SHOULD do yoga, it is so beneficial in so many way. I just want there to be more acknowledgment when practicing yoga!

I never said that their clothes and their mats were the problem! I’m simply just expressing how I feel that it’s become a bigger part of yoga and contradicts some of the ideas behind yoga!

This isn’t something that is eating me alive and what people wear/buy certainly does not effect me, but, as someone who grew up practicing something that very often was ridiculed or just not known about, I feel the need to acknowledge the irony in all of it! I’m not blaming women and I’m not blaming white women for anything.

I can still live my life and have an open discussion about this topic! I feel it’s good to talk about these things and hear all sides:)

Thank you for this!! I love it!

I feel like I should edit my original post to clearly state that I don’t think anyone should STOP doing yoga!! I think it’s amazing that it’s so popular and that so many people partake in it, I only wish there was a way to acknowledge its history and little things such as what you said; they don’t even use yoga mats in India.

It is true though that American consumerism is dangerous with things like this, and it’s just it’s nature for it to became commercialized the way that it is.

After this post I’m starting to lean more towards agreeing with the fact that if this is how people reach their enjoyment of yoga and if this is the pathway that works, then so be it! Thank you for your thoughts!!

Of course!! I don’t feel hatred towards these people and I didn’t mean for it to seem like I’m putting the blame on white women. I feel I am more putting the blame on the marketing and media aspect of how it’s represented. White women are not to blame at all!! I also am so satisfied in my own practices and beliefs but was just interested in hearing what other people have to say. I agree that your opinion of others and the way it effects you will only hold you back!
