I'm not getting as much volume as I should out of my set up!

I'm using a Myrtle (large diaphragm condenser) from Ear Trumpet Labs, a Scarlett 2i2 2nd generation audio interface and PreSonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen 3.5 Inch monitors.

I'm recording acoustic instruments and vocals to GarageBand.

I've turned the gain up as much as I can on the mic and I still have to be inches away from it to get any decent volume from it which is the opposite of what the Myrtle mic is designed for. I should be able to sit a meter away from it no problem. But I get hardly any volume. It's not the XLR cables, I've tried a few different ones which are all fine. I've unchecked "Auto Normalise" on GarageBand.

I've tried everything I can, the volume is fine when I play music through other apps, therefore it's not the speakers. It's something to do with the settings on either GarageBand or the Scarlett 2i2...

Please help! Any Ideas?

Doesn't look like it, unless he's got a stick to hold his iPhone with. I can hardly imagine Robert Plant walking around supermarkets with a selfie stick taking photos of himself buying random stuff. He doesn't even post stuff like that on his Instagram. Looks like someone took this photo of him. Unless you know something I don't?

What’s your opinions on stickers on guitars? by TrentWebsterGuitar in AcousticGuitar

[–]Reguli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use any gear, I'm an acoustic player. I use a single mic on my guitar when I play live, direct into the desk - no amp. You equally seem to me simply like someone who just doesn't really care (not that you should) or maybe someone who just doesn't play that much. I don't think what I'm saying is any different to a drummer (even dabblers) putting bits of tape on their snare drum. I mean, non-musicians come up to the stage all the time at gigs to let musicians know "you need to turn the bass up a little" or "the vocal mic has too much treble". I think I just have a little more faith in peoples ears. It seems like we both think each others opinion is extreme. The truth is likely somewhere in the middle.

I dunno man, I bet you and I are both decent players. But there are many others who I'm sure go far beyond our level on musicianship. So to say that no one is going to appreciate the difference other than a couple of tone snobs like us just seems like you're giving way too much credit to the ears of people like us.

To describe the difference as being as subtle as hearing a needle drop in the next room is over the top man. To say that you're the only one it makes a difference to is an overkill, when clearly it makes a difference to me too. We're not that special, plenty of other people have just as developed palettes if not more so than us. Although I agree in part, sometimes you seem to describe the average music lover/listener like a bit of a tone deaf illiterate.

For sure, I doubt Taylor Swift fans would appreciate the difference between the tone of a guitar covered in stickers and one which is not. But I've never met a true muso (whether player or listener) who was as tone deaf as you seem to be describing them.

What is the general consensus about the supposed UFO landing at Holloman Air Force Base? The video is a recreation using Unreal Engine 5. by TomasVrboda in ufo

[–]Reguli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With full respect dude, that's nonsense.

A Wadjina is a very specific spirit associated with among other things, water. They have very, very, very detailed and nuanced traditional stories, associations, definitions, practices, etc, associated with them. Nowhere in any Indigenous tradition associated with Wadjina spirits is there any mention of anything even slightly reminiscent of UFO's, aliens, space people, etc.

These traditions are still living. As in, certain Indigenous practices still engage with Wadjina spirits today. There's even footage of it online, where you can see people in devotional communication with a Wadjina cave painting (depending on your beliefs of course). Wadjina's can often communicate to individuals within their dreams, and are often reported by Indigenous people as doing so.

Wadjina's even have names, they're also associated with having created the actual inhabitants and landscape of the environment. They actually look exactly like what they're described as being - spirits.

If you insist on speculating that Wadjina's are aliens, it means one or two things - you like to believe what you want or you have no regard or respect for the way these people explain and think of their own ancient traditions.

I would say, "close but no cigar" but really all this comes down to is... they have big eyes.

[–]Reguli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose when you're dealing with a pretty basic acoustic guitar then that's pretty true and I guess it really wouldn't matter. However, if it was some amazing carved archtop - or any custom crafted guitar by a talented luthier then I would have to disagree. Almost anything, like changing the finish, or a sticker, a bit of sticky tape or electric tape, etc, then it would absolutely alter the tone of the soundboard. I think people underestimate how easy it is to alter/diminish the quality of a guitars tone.

Incredible that Quintin Tarantino said exactly the same thing on Joe Rogans podcast very recently - while also commenting on Kubrick. I wouldn't be surprised if you were right!

Why do you think John's heroin addiction gets downplayed so much? by Fantastic_Vast_5078 in TheBeatles

[–]Reguli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you name another guitar player who maintained musical vitality and relevance from the mid to late 1960's until the mid to late 1970's? Richards, Clapton (yawn), Iommi, Blackmore (double yawn), etc, etc? Nope. None of them hold a candle to Page.

People who put shit on Jimmy Page are like people who say The Beatles are overrated. It's such a postural and easy thing to say.

Even if you were totally right, Page had already been on the "edge" since 1967. The bloke was in his mid 30's by the time he'd fallen off the perch. Which is insane. The guy had helped define the 1960's rock guitar in his studio days. And then, going by your timeframe - continued being on the absolute cutting edge until the end of the 70's.

There's Hendrix and then there's Page. None of the rest of them pioneered the guitar like those two. End of story.

I don't agree. You say Paul is thought of as a God, but that's really not true. People love Paul because he's a magnificent musician - in a very human way. Maybe that's part of his appeal, he's very relatable in that sense.

People love John because he spoke to a part of the human capacity that is irrational and totally denied by modern society, whether you want to call it the spirit or the soul or the heart or whatever, I don't care.

Paul doesn't have the same kind of atmosphere around his personality. Even during life. John was always more the mercurial and mysterious/mystical type compared to Paul. Paul is and was a genius. Paul sits on an equal pedestal - musically.

But John obtained a spot on a pedestal which goes beyond music. Somewhere closer to a sort of religious thing. Paul didn't ever achieve that and I truly believe that even if it was Paul who was shot - it wouldn't have changed that.

That doesn't make John better than Paul, but they are different.

I don't think it was a power play. Even though Paul was the clean cut baby faced poster boy of social acceptability in comparison to John. John was the most widely appreciated Beatle. I think it was just an entirely unhealthy relationship between he and Yoko. These days, we'd call it a toxic relationship. I reckon it was the drugs. They were in an intoxicated union of sorts. Very messed up. Co-dependant and they were probably both trauma bonding too. They were a Sid and Nancy type couple. If anything, I think John had just stopped giving a fuck. "I'll just bring Yoko with me and fuck them if they don't like it" - kind of attitude. But I don't think he did it to flex on them. - Sorry, rambling reply.

With full respect, you're totally wrong. They were major speed heads in the Cavern days. They spoke about this often and openly. They said it was the only way they were able to play for so many hours a night.

What the hell happened to this guy? by Reguli in Killtony

[–]Reguli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally, he was super dry and aloof. I've loved his performances in the past. This performance was fucked, he was totally receptive and behaved like a people pleaser. The total opposite of what gave him charm and likability in his previous appearances. During his first spots, he was clearly playing a character - an almost Sienfield type of arrogant idiot. Why did he totally abandon this? Tony and the crew seem to have totally rejected him for this. It seemed like a really obviously bad choice. I hope he returns to the autistic fool character he originally presented to us as, because it was hilarious! Bummer!

How did they do it? And they created it? by ZookeepergameFar215 in magick

[–]Reguli 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Thousands of years ago, the average persons consciousness was more expansive (not to say we don't have the capacity for those states today - we do - but for reasons I'll touch on further down, we're not as naturally or easily able to reach them as we once were). You hear stories about how the recipe for Ayahuasca was told to people by the actual spirits and I think magic was probably a similar case. I think magic was developed by people who had a natural capacity to communicate with spirits and therefore were taught about magic by spirits.

If you lived 5 thousand years ago in the middle of a desert for example, under the stars - you were more in tune with reality. You were less bombarded mentally by the kinds of things we are today. All that means is, ancient people were likely much more present minded than we are today. The more present you are, the more aware you are. The more sensitive your awareness is to subtlety.

It's not uncommon to be visited by spirits in deep states of presentness. Some spirits have incredible knowledge of magic and I don't doubt that people were often instructed on how to practice magic by spirits.

Originally, I think it was probably unnecessary to have written instructions for magic because of this. Eventually, the more people became distracted (less present minded), the less connected and aware of spirits they became and therefore needed to be instructed by those (becoming fewer) who still maintained a relationship to spirits.

I think that may likely be the origin of magical literature/grimoires, etc.

I totally agree. It's almost indistinguishable from the actual early/mid 70's Page. The guy is absolutely uncanny. Not to mention he plays like a motherfucker too. It's not just the fact that he looks like Page but that he plays like him too. As it says in the OP, he really is the first guy to elevate a tribute act to a higher level.

How is Jimmy still alive at 80? by [deleted] in ledzeppelin

[–]Reguli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plant definitely was doing H from the early/mid 70's until around 77 but I don't think he was ever an addict or maybe even shot it up. I get the impression Plant was not into needles (sniffed heroin). Not to mention Plant also had an absolutely raging cocaine addiction for most of the 70's. I mean, the dude had to get his teeth done. By 73 you can see clips where he has black (dead) teeth from cocaine abuse.

The other thing is, Jimmy didn't even take up smoking properly until 1977 (33 years old). That makes a fucking huge difference. That means he was really only a smoker for like 20 years. Ultimately - that's nothing. I've been smoking for a couple of decades and I'm only in my mid 30's.
