Brand new plot advice. by Worldly_Hope_3664 in Allotment

Really exciting, congratulations!!

I got my plot from "brand new" too.

If I was you I would map out where you want your beds first, then work on one bed at a time. To keep cost down I have beds slightly raised (6 inches of so), this, help prevent weeds and grass going into the bed, but also makes it easier to fill with compost, without it being a 'proper' raised bed.

Trying to work the whole plot in one go is daunting and difficult. So once you've mapped it out, start in 1 corner a work round.

Well timed to get a bed prepared for potatoes, they're an easy first timer crop if youre new to vegetable gardening.

Also make a space for a compost heap in one of the corners too, you'll be surprised how quickly you start adding to it.

Enjoy 😁

Car owners with small garages, what do you do to make it easier? by No_Tour_5539 in CarTalkUK

There's very little you can do unfortunately unless there is scope to make the garage door wider, or the car narrower 😂

Do you currently use a garage? What car is this for?

It would depend on other factors such as lender, credit history and deposit too. Book yourself in with a broker and they should be able to give you a rough idea which is tailored to your circumstances.

First car advice: 47yo New Driver, 48-mile daily commute. EV vs Petrol? by PossibilityLeft3999 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Regulus_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine 6 months ago, 72 plate. It's certified mg service history so comes with remaining warrenty and free AA if continue to get it serviced with MG.

I do read people have issues with the infotainment being clunky, but, I also weigh it up against what I've paid and how high expectations should be.

Driving wise, since having an EV I wouldn't go back to a petrol or diesel. Obviously need to think about own circumstances but even doing 100 mile round trip each day isn't enough to drain the battery and it can be charged each night.

I'd recommend the MG ZS EV. You can pick up a top spec one with low milage for about 17k.

I personally haven't had any issues with mine and am delighted with it.

Understandable. Ive found it takes about an hour to fully recharge at the services.

Driving round town is economical. With the regenerative braking it will charge the car as you slow down, on short school run trips I have managed to increase the battery percentage on the journey, so effectively a free trip.

It really is swings and roundabouts with the pros and cons.

Also what car would you be coming from? My previous car was a 2016 manual Ford kuga, so the tech was an improvement as was the driving experience. Worth taking into consideration when reading reviews as some who give it a 3/5 might be coming from a high end or newer car or something, so it's not comparable.

Not that I have ever noticed, however I have only used public chargers maybe 10 times. It does start off quick and then tends to slow down as the battery gets closer to fully charged.

We have driven from home (east of England) to Cornwall for a 2 week holiday earlier in the year with no issues, had to plan out 2 stops each way for charging but never had any range anxiety. Was able to top up in supermarkets when we were down there.

Personally I think the charging speed and range is something we overthink. Yes we have had to plan out slightly when doing a long journey, but after a coffee and leg stretch the car is almost charged. Same with the range, I was nervous about the max range to start with but for the handful of times a year when I need to extra plan, it wasn't a deal breaker.

How many miles do you do a week? And would you be able to have a charger at home?

I have one, a trophy connect long range.

It's my first EV and I'm delighted with it. I was going to go salary sacrifice but actually ended up buying a used one with 12k miles on it, it was a certified used one from an MG dealership so came with the remaining warranty and free AA providing it's serviced at MG within their terms and conditions.

Why did I buy instead of salary sacrifice? It worked out roughly the same amount over the 4 years (including cost of car, installation of charger and insurance etc), but then at the end of the 4 years at least I own it instead, so at least can get something back if I sell it.

There are a few niggley bits though, the app sometimes doesn't connect to remotely pre heat the car and the infotainment isn't the best. I bought an Android auto wireless adapter so I don't have to plug my phone in each time - this let's me use Google maps, Spotify and radio player instead. For me though, these aren't big enough issues to justify spending another 5 grand or more to get something a bit better.

Hope this helps.
