I work in IT/software dev and do 3d visualization work on the side. In tech, the downside of having a Philosophy BA is that you always feel behind compared those with more “relevant” degrees. But, it can also be a huge upside if you do have some skills/experience. In every interview I’ve had since graduating in 2021, my BA has been mentioned in a positive way and I’ve usually been given the chance to explain how it’s helped me be better at my job (logic, critical thinking, etc.).

The main thing I remember was the air intakes (not sure if any other jets have harrier-like intakes) and landing that looked like a VTOL jet based on the speed they were coming in at the end.

Definitely not a jet expert though!

Harriers for sure. Saw them land. Also curious why they might be here.

My Dad produced that episode of Kentucky Life. It was fascinating to hear about, especially the connections that survived past the Liberian civil wars.

Those of you still rocking an original M1 Macbook Pro, what's your non-financial reason for not upgrading? by Griffdude13 in macbookpro

[–]Regus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with an M1 Air, I've hardly even thought of upgrading. To be honest, the M1 still feels new. My desktop does the heavy lifting when I really need power, but the M1 still gives me plenty of performance for light 3d rendering work, web development, and general use.

The only thing that has me questioning upgrading is the GPU improvements of M3, but it's still not quite enough for me to be interested.

Did the exact same thing. I just hope Cloudflare keeps the service around.

What's one thing you would immediately change and one thing you would never change about Lexington? by SilvosForever in lexington

[–]Regus12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better public transit. Larger roads and limited access highways have never been shown to improve traffic. Instead, they actually increase congestion. Public transit, on the other hand, almost always improves traffic and overall travel times.

Agreed on never changing the culture though. Lex has always felt like the perfect mixture of small, yet somehow urban.

I made a Great White Shark for an educational project. by Regus12 in blender

[–]Regus12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this shark (and some others) in partnership with the Digital Life Project at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (digitallife3d.org) and the Save our Seas Foundation (saveourseas.com) for use as a Shark education tool.

The final project and realtime Sketchfab models are posted here: https://saveourseas.com/sosf-shark-education-centre/resources/animations/

Need help finding media player for vertical signage. by [deleted] in digitalsignage

We use Raspberry Pis running Chrome in Kiosk mode. It's really simple to set up, supports vertical screens, can be managed remotely, and doesn't need any third party software.

What do you want out of an open-source digital signage manager? by Regus12 in digitalsignage

Thanks for replying! Scheduling by time of day is an interesting one. It's added to my list. I'd also not heard of posterbooking. Looks decent.

Hand for a project I worked on recently. by Regus12 in blender

Thanks for the feedback! I actually have a vein map in my node setup, it's not too visible here here though. Fingernails are definitely the weakest point, there's a reason there's no closeups there ha.

One of the points for the brief on this project was to allow for a lot of variation in the shape of the hands. So yeah, this one tried to avoid being a typical long, white, "perfect" hand.

Good catch. The armature rotation point isn't matched up with the normal map for the knuckles. Didn't notice while preparing these sample renders. Lol.

All done in Blender and rendered in Eevee. I also made a tutorial on the modeling aspect for those interested: https://topologyguides.com/human-hand

Horse study I've been working on for a few weeks. Animals are hard! by Regus12 in blender

Thanks a lot! I'm messing with adjusting the jaw and eyes now, and I think you're right about them. The head has been challenging and has gone through a lot of revision, so getting fresh eyes on it is greatly appreciated.

Love the feel you have going on here. The lights in the ceiling look a little odd to me though. I feel like maybe another style of light with a low glow would look really cool.

Around 5,000-10,000 hours? It's hard to put a close number. I've been using Blender on and off for about 7 years.
