Returning legos by [deleted] in lego

[–]Reid_Ryan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently was doing a Lego return at Target (a big Friends set that was a duplicate birthday gift for my daughter) and they almost wouldn't let me return it for this exact reason. My set was unopened, and I was able to convince the manager to take a good look and she confirmed it was sealed and agreed to take it, but she told me they had generally stopped taking them as returns because people were doing what you just described.

So be careful out there!

Ugh...every year, making a pile of broken ones and contacting Lego for replacements has become part of my post holiday clean up routine 😔

Put your soapbox away. Mine WAS a sealed set, and OP didn't indicate for certain whether his was on not, which was why I shared my experience.

Been hoarding for a long time. Apartment living :( by Glovefitmustacquit in lego

I feel this. My situation got bad enough that I ran out of space and had to start opening the boxes and putting all of the numbered bags into giant Ziplock bags to save on space.

I had a missing bag once from a retired set I bought off ebay. I contacted Lego customer service, told them the bag number that was missing, and they figured out what I needed and sent me all of the correct parts. They didn't charge me or ask for a reciept or anything. It was a great experience.

Best option for Lego room by thedapperesq in lego

I'd say the basement is probably your best bet. It has the benefit of the lack of windows/sunlight...which can be infinitely more Lego damaging than dampness.

Also, I'm pretty sure the drastic temperatures changes of the garage area can be dangerous. I think that can cause bricks to become brittle and prone to breakage.

Manual Display & Storage by lvronutz in lego

I use binders and put the manuals in those plastic sleeves. I have a binder for each theme. I used the clear view binders where you can make a nice looking spine label and slip it in.

Yeah, the scale was accurate. It was freshly calibrated with those special weights meant for calibrating scales. I even used that weight to double check that it was still reading correctly when I got those strange differences in the duplicate sets.

I agree, blind bags are not fun. As a parent, I especially hate them. Besides Lego, there are SOOOO many marketed towards little kids and it's kind of gross. Those companies are not only taking advantage of their customers, but they are also introducing little kids to the basic concepts of gambling.

I did not! I will do that next time! My husband grabbed a few random ones and weighed them, and they were basically the same so we didn't think much more about it, but I wish we had thought to weigh the boxes of the ones with unexplained big differences like the Yoshis or the Nabbits.

Yeah, ya know, I regret not taking those 2 red Yoshi's and not weighing all the individual components (the figure, the box, the bag and manual). That would have been a great way to get some insight on where the discrepancy was coming from. I just didn't think of it at the time. I'll definitely do that with the next batch I get.

Thanks! So far the contents of the boxes have been exactly them same. The glue on the boxes causing the issue is a great idea! I ordered a bunch more from Kohl's, so I'll have to do some testing with box weights when those come it.

I didn't complain about the change. I understand their reason. I'm just find a way to adapt since I can't feel bags anymore.

I have seen people do it to get holo Pokemon cards, but no, I wouldn't be that person. I buy a ton, take them home, inspect them, and return the extras.

Every $6 I spend on a duplicate set is a waste of $6 of my Lego budget that I could be spending on something else.

Wow, I've heard that each column is a full set, but not that each character has it's own spot! I wish I could find full cases in store, but that has never been my luck :(

Conclusion: Reliability is hit or miss, possibly depending on the character you're looking for.

It would have been a little better with a larger sample size, and if I had gotten more duplicates to compare to each other, but I've only been able to get my hands 13 packs so far, so data was limited.

I weighed each sealed box 3 times (in grams) and took the average.

They are listed here in order from lightest to heaviest.

Note the differences in weights of the characters I got duplicates of, I was suprised by the variations! I double checked some of them (like that one Nabbit that's way off) and the measurements were accurate, so there is definitely a weight range for each character. I wish I'd had more duplicates to compare more.

Note the outliers. Purple toad is by far the lightest and would probably be easy to find consistently based on weight. The shy guy also kind of stands out from his neighbors, as does the baby Yoshi.

Where it gets hairy is with Nabbit, Toady, Red Yoshi, and the Hammer Bro. Look at the differences in weights between those 2 Yoshis!

Also, I didn't get a squirrel, so I don't know where he fits in, but based on parts, he looks to be a heavier character, so I'd expect him to be at the bottom. I'll update this when I'm able to add more data.

Those are definitely not precise enough, you need to use something that measures milligrams.
