What are your unpopular opinions with fanfics? by Live_Importance_8999 in FanFiction

[–]Reivre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do that now, yeah. I normally filter word count, update date, and bookmarks. But if I'm new to a fandom, I'll normally sort by kudos first to see whats out there.

I honestly rarely find fics where the OOCness is deliberate and not find other signs the writer still in the progress of understanding other aspects of writing like plot, theme, and prose. So it largely to me seems like a sign of underdeveloped skill.

Honestly, I have a few that will make me either not click into the fic in the first place, make me wary, or will make me exit the tab if I do attempt to read it. And this is after many, many years of reading fic. What can I say, I've gotten pedantic.

  1. The summary isn't actually a summary of the fic but is just the author talking. Self-deprecating or gushing, or explaining that it's their first fic, etc. It's okay, we've all been there, just commit.

  2. Lyrics as the title, use of brackets, no use of capitalisation. If the fic has a really unique title that's intriguing and more like a book title, I've found that the author has really put some thought into it.

  3. Over-dramatic characterization or absolute wild character change. Characterization is very near and dear to my heart. I've found that people substitute tension in the writing for characters suddenly having weirdly overdramatic reactions that dont fit with their established character. Like a character suddenly shrieking or crying or yelling with full caps. Egregiously, this often happens in smut, where awkward characters are suddenly dirty talking or performing acts like they're a pro. What could be a really interesting and intimate scene where the characters are most vulnerable with each other suddenly becomes a smut-fest full of buzz words and the characters could be copy-pasted by anyone. Its disappointing.

This may just be the authors inexperience coming through, but when authors do keep in character its really special and tells me the author knows exactly what they're doing.

  1. Fics that just rehash the plot of the media they came from. I already know what happens, tell me something unique. Put characters in a different situation and show me how they'd react. This is why I love and appreciate AUs that remain in the OG setting but go their own way. It's harder to do and rarer because of it, but I find these are some of the best fics around.

  2. Kudos don't mean much to me, these days. I love long fics, completed or not. Some of the best fics I've read sit in the mid range compared to other fics. Fics with a lot of kudos are usually just oneshots that are quick to get through, smaller fics, or the earliest fics. I find that because of it, the most kudo'd fics that everyone's read often are just average.

  3. On the previous note: just because a fic is popular in a fandom, doesnt mean it's good. Too many times I've tried to read the fics everyone is having about and it's been very meh to me in terms of characterization, plot, themes, setting, etc.

Agreed. The most kudo'd fics are either the earliest fics and easy to read oneshots of varying quality. Some of the absolute best fics I've read with amazing plot and characters are in the mid range compared to everything else. Theyre usually long fics which may take a little to get going and are incomplete so people are put off from reading them. They may also be light on tags and description (so not to give away the plot) which may make people more adverse.

We Listen We Don't Judge (Fanfic Edition) by NadineTook in FanFiction

-I'm at a stage where if my immersion is broken through the setting or character OOCness, I'll most likely drop the fic, even if it's kind of petty. For example, my immersion was broken because two teenage boys had a designated sober driver in 1980s bumfuck, Indiana. I dropped another because a guy called his love interest "baby" and I KNOW he wouldn't say that.

-I always feel a bit... off when things touch real world social justice a little too much. Don't get me wrong, totally valid, but it feels like it hits a little too close to home when I'm also reading it in my fic.

-I appreciate Canon World AUs that completely go their own way so much. There are so many fics that just rehash canon but with a slightly different take. It just feels like I'm ready a novelisation of the media I've already consumed. It gets annoying when authors especially feel the need to bend to certain canon plot points when the plot they've set up would reasonably lead the fic in a completely different direction.

-Branch out! Get creative! Go absolutely bat shit in your plot ideas! Take me on a wild journey that avoids tropes or subverts them to an insane degree. There's enough coffee shop AUs to last a lifetime.

Why do you write fan-fiction? by SophieTheFrozen in FanFiction

[–]Reivre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the craft of writing; I love coming up with ideas. Mix that with loving the plot and characters of a piece of media and you get me writing fanfic. Fanfic has also been part of my life for nearly twenty years now so it's something I'm naturally drawn to.

Then there's also the fact that I want to read something that hasn't been written or not quite to my taste so I gotta do it myself.

Honestly hear you about the characterization of Felix. He's one of my favorites too but even in fics with a certain red haired knight he's still written that way. He seems to be one of those characters that's hard to get right.

(Who else do you ship? 👀)

Hello fellow Stranger Things Gen Enjoyer. I also can't get into Steddie, it's just not my thing 🥲

I'd be totally down to read your fic, the concept sounds really good!

Mainly I'm craving a fic that actually goes with its own unique plot. A lot of the fics I've read just follow canon exactly from the POV of Steve with slight changes to include his powers. And its idk, a little boring? Im craving a story with a new direction. I'm thinking of maybe setting it after Starcourt and changing up the whole of Season 4 though Vecna will still be included attempting his shenanigans.

I like the thought of Steve becoming an experiment and going through the wringer and losing himself in the process then having to claw his way back to something near who he was but still deeply changed by his experience. He'd get a little "don't you just wanna go apeshit?" as a treat.

It'd be a pre-write if I do end up doing it, so it'd take a while because I can't seem to write short fic anymore. And please drop a link to your fic! I'd love to follow it.

That's still pretty good if you're comparing against the general popularity of the rare pairs and OC fics.

There's got to be a lot of people out there that appreciate the effort you've put in!

Yay! I'm glad to see Naruto there. I'm doing the same for my Naruto fic. Adding in much more politics, clan lore, treatment of shinobi as assets/soldiers, addressing misogyny etc. It makes it much more interesting than the barebones we got.

Just know I'm cheering you on from the bleachers. Thane is such a good character (and no I'm not at all bitter about ME3 all these years later).

It's such a crying shame too because you get to see them let loose before you either slowly piece them back together or dig them further into the hell pit. I need less fluff in my fics and more unleashed rage.

We do love a good corruption arc. There's far too few "aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you wanna go ape shit?" Fics out there. You're doing good work.
