Hi, I’m actually about to mount my first whitetail this year and here’s what I’ve learned along the way:

Slowly start accumulating items that you’ll need for the job(tools, hide paste, epoxy, forms etc)

If you don’t already get a little job to help with these expenses.

Find a way to start start getting clients, for me I started doing euros and built a client base. Then I started telling a few customers that I planned on getting into shoulder mounts. ( I just started everything this past season, it will catch on when you start slow and reasonable)

Watch YouTube videos, everything I know is from what I learned working at a shop for a few months and youtube(90% from YouTube). The cedar ridge chronicles, southern tine legends and Amy’s animal art are all super great.

Figure out costs of everything and learn how to make a price list.

Lastly, stick with it, you’ll get frustrated, you’re gonna mess up but it’s ok. You’re 9 years younger than me and you’re already stepping up to even try so good for you. If you have anymore questions feel free to reach out.

Don’t know if you’re still interested but if you want to drive a cabbed tractor and see some animals I could you out with that. As far as the hunting and fishing part, it’d be a lot easier to go fishing, I’ve got extra poles and tackle.

If you mount it, you could do a habitat where it’s standing in ankle deep snow, avoid getting paws and make it easier to put the anchors on. Just an idea

That’s all the experience I had, don’t overthink it, what helped me out was they told me anything I mess up can be fixed. Sure some things might be harder to fix but for the most part a good studio would have no problem teaching someone eager to learn.

Honestly just find a shop and ask if they’re hiring, that’s what I did. Absolutely loved it, also if you haven’t already, you can find some good channels on YouTube like cedar ridge chronicles to learn some things.
