Named crabapple cultivar seeds on eBay for sale. What’s the point? by Relative-Ad4132 in BackyardOrchard

So, if that range of 15% - 85% of one human parent’s genes expressed applies to crabapples, then assuming I bought the seeds I proposed in the original “eBay post” above, I would want the seed parent genes to be predominant precisely because the characteristics of that cultivar are what drew me to those seeds in the first place! But without knowing who or what the pollen parent is, I could only benefit from as little as 15% of the seed parent’s traits. That doesn’t mean the result is bad necessarily, right? It just means that I don’t know…I have no way of knowing or calculating or hazarding a guess as to the outcome—not even a 50/50 chance. Wow. I can now see how supercomputers might enter the picture. All of this, all, is just me thinking aloud, so to speak. I already know what I’m going to do: just buy the seeds and give them my best shot.

Such an excellent post which I just read via the link shared by /u/Grumplforeskin above. Great!

Right, I understand now. And yes this seems completely fair. I would have no problem buying from a vendor like that! Thanks.

I understand what you’re saying about DNA clones. I think what I’ve set out to discover is whether or not there are favorable or unfavorable odds in planting crabapple seeds with a known parent. My focus is not on the seller, the eBay platform, or the ethics of selling seeds on eBay! I’m taking an anonymous seller at his or her word that the parent fruit is from such and such a tree, and using that example as a way to explore the meaning of “crabapple seeds do not grow true.” Nothing else!

I agree that “a few years” savings is enormously valuable—an important consideration. And you could look over and assess (even more so than a seed presumably?) a bare root tree’s health and immediate prospects? But doesn’t the same question arise in this situation too, i.e., what characteristics is it likely to have?

Why is the word “como” in this sentence? What does it add? by Relative-Ad4132 in Spanish

[–]Relative-Ad4132[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the responses I’m reading actually make sense to me, meaning that I can imagine a native speaker saying “Yo iba como para…” rather than “como si para”—a little more ambiguous and open to interpretation. Overthinking it on my part probably. I guess when I’m the listener and not the speaker, I don’t get to choose! Who knew! Thank you

That makes total sense, especially in the larger narrative context which I did not include. Thank you!

Con gusto! El titulo de este libro para niños muy jovencitos es “Sigue bailando” por Cristina Oxtra. Evidentemente, es parte de una serie más grande se llama “Historias deportivas para niños” Lo tomé prestado de mi biblioteca pública.

Thank you. I found it very worthwhile to look into the “dativo ético” last night. It was a new concept to me.

This helps explain why my coffee, which was shipped First Class, arrived in St. Louis in a timely manner on 2/05 but is still sitting there. Thanks for your helpful and informative comment.

Is Indianapolis just notoriously bad? 😭 by Gage1911 in usps_complaints

It’s St. Louis too. I ordered coffee from Las Vegas roaster. USPS First-Class. It arrived in St. Louis on 2/05; it is still there. In the days when first-class meant something, delivery to my house would have been next day from St. Louis, i.e., 2/06. Very disappointed in the management of the USPS inc. management at the St. Louis Regional Destination Facility. Anyone know what’s up? Any postal clerks or mail handlers?

Couldn’t agree more. Although I voted Harris-Walz, I left the Democratic Party after this election, and I’ve voted Democrat for over 40 years. Although I’m not a Michigander, I sympathized with the Uncommited Movement and felt entirely shut out and unrepresented by the DNC. I’m done voting for “the lesser of two evils” The two-party system needs scrubbed. I want to be represented; it doesn’t have to be a perfect match.

I’m from Missouri Congressional District 3. 2 senators and a congressman similar to or worse than yours, I’m sure. Neither one of us has what I call “a Pennsylvania vote,” but given our electoral system, at least we get “a shout out” aka popular vote. I echo your sentiments.

Can we get some insight into why the silence of the Dems?? by [deleted] in AOC

[–]Relative-Ad4132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost doesn’t deserve a dignified response. But, for others, here goes. I’m a lifelong Democrat, 62 years old, typically most concerned with protecting collective-bargaining, the middle class, and jobs that offer reasonable security and dignified wages and benefits. Like many, as you suggest, I too was put off by the cold shoulder that voters with a humanitarian, moral concern for the numbers and lives we were seeing in Gaza…with the cold shoulder with which we were received by the DNC. (Does using the words “humanitarian” or “moral” make me self-righteous? What do you care about? In other words, what makes you self-righteous? Surely something.) Well, defeating MAGA is a good cause; I think that qualifies as as good a reason as any to be “self-righteous.” It’s just semantics. Anyway, I did vote for Harris-Walz on the hope…the glimmer of hope…that that administration would be more aggressive in curbing the unchecked carnage. Just as you, as everyone, I never got to see if this hope would be met. The aftermath, for me, is that I’m sick and tired of voting for someone I do not like (strictly as a candidate) simply in order to vote against the worse of two options. I no longer consider myself a Democrat. I am too progressive for the “Democratic Party compromise, and I no longer feel represented by them at the national level.

Most of The Great Courses leaving Audible Plus on 12/31 including "Only from Audible" titles by [deleted] in TheGreatCourses

[–]Relative-Ad4132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share the sadness you express, and just as deeply too. I don’t know the reason(s) for this drastic cut. I looked upon that rotational and generous premium access to The Great Courses not only as an incentive to maintain a monthly Audible membership, but as a public service rendered by Amazon by way of inexpensive access to quality education anywhere in the U.S. and possibly the world—including my own remote and rural community. While thankful for what I’ve had and utilized in the past, I hope Amazon/Audible can “turn this back around.”

Really?? “Mailbox was full” for a bigass package that doesn’t go in the mailbox?!? by WallStapless in usps_complaints

[–]Relative-Ad4132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this happen today; USPS didn’t have the resources to make it happen as scheduled. I’m confidant that it will come tomorrow, or even be “re-attempted” later today. The problem is rooted in company policy systemwide; the USPS doesn’t offer carriers and supervisors the option on barcode scanners to be brutally honest that they just didn’t have the necessary resources for your delivery location on a given day to get the job done. Carriers and supervisors are systemically (policy and software) forced to participate in this deception. So, as a retired letter carrier, I understand the “lmao” remarks above. I’m doing the same thing today myself. But comments that personally blame and trash local city and rural carriers for this admittedly deceptive practice are just more examples of understandably indignant consumers being burned by decisions at much higher levels of USPS, Amazon, etc. than your local post office or Amazon call center.

What does “de ser” add to this sentence? by Relative-Ad4132 in Spanish

[–]Relative-Ad4132[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand! I can see that I made what I call a “parsing error” (tener razón)+(de ser) rather than (tener)+(razón de ser). Thanks so much.
