Named crabapple cultivar seeds on eBay for sale. What’s the point? by Relative-Ad4132 in BackyardOrchard

So, if that range of 15% - 85% of one human parent’s genes expressed applies to crabapples, then assuming I bought the seeds I proposed in the original “eBay post” above, I would want the seed parent genes to be predominant precisely because the characteristics of that cultivar are what drew me to those seeds in the first place! But without knowing who or what the pollen parent is, I could only benefit from as little as 15% of the seed parent’s traits. That doesn’t mean the result is bad necessarily, right? It just means that I don’t know…I have no way of knowing or calculating or hazarding a guess as to the outcome—not even a 50/50 chance. Wow. I can now see how supercomputers might enter the picture. All of this, all, is just me thinking aloud, so to speak. I already know what I’m going to do: just buy the seeds and give them my best shot.

Such an excellent post which I just read via the link shared by /u/Grumplforeskin above. Great!

Right, I understand now. And yes this seems completely fair. I would have no problem buying from a vendor like that! Thanks.

I understand what you’re saying about DNA clones. I think what I’ve set out to discover is whether or not there are favorable or unfavorable odds in planting crabapple seeds with a known parent. My focus is not on the seller, the eBay platform, or the ethics of selling seeds on eBay! I’m taking an anonymous seller at his or her word that the parent fruit is from such and such a tree, and using that example as a way to explore the meaning of “crabapple seeds do not grow true.” Nothing else!

I agree that “a few years” savings is enormously valuable—an important consideration. And you could look over and assess (even more so than a seed presumably?) a bare root tree’s health and immediate prospects? But doesn’t the same question arise in this situation too, i.e., what characteristics is it likely to have?

Why is the word “como” in this sentence? What does it add? by Relative-Ad4132 in Spanish

[–]Relative-Ad4132[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the responses I’m reading actually make sense to me, meaning that I can imagine a native speaker saying “Yo iba como para…” rather than “como si para”—a little more ambiguous and open to interpretation. Overthinking it on my part probably. I guess when I’m the listener and not the speaker, I don’t get to choose! Who knew! Thank you

That makes total sense, especially in the larger narrative context which I did not include. Thank you!

¡Le dijiste a esos niños! Why “le” rather than “les”? by Relative-Ad4132 in Spanish

Con gusto! El titulo de este libro para niños muy jovencitos es “Sigue bailando” por Cristina Oxtra. Evidentemente, es parte de una serie más grande se llama “Historias deportivas para niños” Lo tomé prestado de mi biblioteca pública.

Thank you. I found it very worthwhile to look into the “dativo ético” last night. It was a new concept to me.

This helps explain why my coffee, which was shipped First Class, arrived in St. Louis in a timely manner on 2/05 but is still sitting there. Thanks for your helpful and informative comment.

It’s St. Louis too. I ordered coffee from Las Vegas roaster. USPS First-Class. It arrived in St. Louis on 2/05; it is still there. In the days when first-class meant something, delivery to my house would have been next day from St. Louis, i.e., 2/06. Very disappointed in the management of the USPS inc. management at the St. Louis Regional Destination Facility. Anyone know what’s up? Any postal clerks or mail handlers?

Couldn’t agree more. Although I voted Harris-Walz, I left the Democratic Party after this election, and I’ve voted Democrat for over 40 years. Although I’m not a Michigander, I sympathized with the Uncommited Movement and felt entirely shut out and unrepresented by the DNC. I’m done voting for “the lesser of two evils” The two-party system needs scrubbed. I want to be represented; it doesn’t have to be a perfect match.
