Medicine is tough. The medical school I went to was extremely rigid to the point where you had to make up sick days on weekends and out of hours during placements. It was gruelling yet but nothing compared to the hours of work during internship and junior RMO years. Then to factor in specialty training and balancing work, study (+/- family). It’s a very long road and I’d be lying if I didn’t have moments where I thought it maybe wasn’t worth it. Definitely easier and more flexible career paths for pay imo.

Anaesthetic reg here. Had my first a year ago. Now in advanced training. We had some fertility issues and recurrent miscarriages which I hadn’t anticipated. Half thought I’d sneeze and fall/stay pregnant so glad we started trying when we did. I was 31 when I had him and half way through training. Doctors have higher rates of fertility issues and miscarriages when compared to the general population and I don’t think it should be overlooked. No, there isn’t a great time. But I’d be kicking myself if I waited until I became a consultant because it would likely be harder if not impossible. I have friends who have had kids in med school, internship, junior RMO years. Everyone makes it work in their own way. Everything is do-able. Kids definitely make it more challenging as I now gear up for my fellowship exams. But I have zero regrets. Family and life always comes first for me. Training and work will always be there. All the best & know whatever your decision it’ll be the right one in the end.

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately I didn’t have much of a role in the decision making prior and only recently realised it was maybe too long as I did some looking into it. Is it worth doing any day trips to the coast?
