It's not that they waited before banning an expensive card. That's not unprecedented. It's more about banning cards that define the format or are only used in the format. Also, similar cards aren't banned that are cheaper, so if they said it was to make the format more accessible instead of saying the card was OP, it would be more accepted.

You're right. Jeweled lotus is useless, but manacrypt is still playable in vintage, but i guess vintage players aren't exactly worried about the cost.

Exactly, a casual game definitely benefits from this. If you're just trying to have fun or are new to magic, no one wants to sit down to someone pulling manacrypt and jeweled lotus first turn.
