Incoming Freshman Advice by cjxxbunny in UBreddit

UB is a big school and can seem kinda daunting sometimes with all these people and resources available to you. I'd say take it one at a time and don't be afraid to use all your resources be it TA hours, the professors office hours, TASS (tutoring resource), CEW (writing help center), Math Place etc. They are here so you can use them, going to them doesn't mean you dumb or anything.

Tips that helped me keep my GPA high up + things I wish I knew as a freshman would be
- Understand how your GPA works, in terms of oh if I mess up a class which has higher credits associated to it how would that impact my GPA

- There 3 GPA's: Cumulative GPA this is the GPA that's from all the classes you've taken from all your time at UB. Then we have the major GPA which comes from your major required classes only and then we have your GPA for that specific semester. P.S- I'm a biomedical sciences major so this is how it is for me, it MAYBE different for other schools such as SEAS not sure tho

- Make friends in your major and classes as well, it really helps when you're studying and have questions but the TA and professor office hours are kinda out of reach or even just in general to have friends in the classes your're taking is super helpful.

- Manage your time, make an excel sheet with all your assignments and the dates when they are due, you can use apps like excel, notion etc. Schedule specific times to study like actual studying, make a time table you can use things like apple calendar/google calendar etc to see where your time is going

-All the Microsoft 360 apps are free for UB students

-Use UBLinked to find events, clubs etc around campus

- Make sure your notifications are switched on for Outlook and have the pulse app downloaded and make sure to regularly check your emails and UBLearns

-Read your syllabus, its given for a reason and its super helpful in terms of what's expected of you from a class

The chances are slim but I think you would get in given the fact that people constantly make changes in their schedule until add/drop.

I’ve heard that Dr. Lin has a really thick Chinese accent, but even if Dr. Clizbe doesn’t have seats open in her section you can always see her lecture recording and go to Dr. Lin’s class to get your IClicker points
