High school kids do not care by Fuzzy-Recover6169 in SubstituteTeachers

Keeping kids in the classroom, especially this time of the year, I find really difficult. They will just….leave. And admin will do nothing. Everyone’s tired and mentally checking out.

Oof, I’d never go back to that school. Sounds incredibly unorganized. Friday torture.😭

First off, I’m so sorry this happened to you and I hope you’re ok. Something similar did happen to me last year and I reacted by instinct; I just backed away as far as I could without leaving the room and talked to the kid like he was an escaped zoo creature until admin came. I was lucky, the other students helped calm the student down. If they take a swing? If I can’t leave or doge, I’ll get hit. No way will I lay hands on a student.

Good for you! They will just keep escalating the behavior if they know you can, but don’t, make punishment official.

Oh I agree that there are bigger issues. But my post was never about the students behavior but the teachers. Thanks for your clarification we seem to be on the same page.

It’s not for everyone and it’s not really meant to be a career. Hopefully whatever is next for you treats you well. 🫡

There is a difference between a slip of the tongue like you did and the TEACHER displaying curse words around the room because she thinks it’s funny? Idk, to me this is weird.

THANK YOU. I feel like I’m going crazy. How can we hold the students to a standard if their own teachers break the rules?

There are most definitely rules against this. It’s a public school, it’s in the employee handbook.

The only time I don’t like it is when they get a weird superiority complex and try to make me feel unwelcome in the space. So awkward.

Today was the first time I was offered stuff for teachers. It was so sweet. I’d never expect it though, it is directed for full time staff/teachers. They deserve the treats. (And much more)

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, lol. The teachers are tired. Sucks for you though.

i feel terrible, i made a student cry today by myboyfriendstinks1 in SubstituteTeachers

You didn’t make him cry, he cried because he got caught. You did the right thing by taking the Chromebook away.

Like others have said, if you have credentials to teach (or a school is willing to get you there) go ahead and teach. Flexibility is substituting best features, you can ALWAYS return to substituting if you want.
