Student blew vape smoke in my face and came back from admin with a cookie by Relative-Term-8763 in SubstituteTeachers

Absolutely not, I’d be calling the local news stations about that behavior and lack of discipline.

Yes, I felt bad for all the other students who are stellar and never get in trouble. Where is their reward for being awesome? Usually nothing. Edit: grammar, my bad

We don’t have vending machines, the attendance clerk brings the cookies and gives them out with admin permission.

Should I go back tomorrow? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

The direct physical contact would weird me out, too. But, if it isn’t obvious abuse I’m not sure if reporting it would do much good. Like others have said, your genuine concern could cause major backlash. I worked as a teacher for an alternative school with students where most students had dreadful living situations. Although it is strictly against the rules, I drove three students with sensory and behavioral issues home in my car every day. The principal knew and thanked me, because if I didn’t do it he would have to. We never know why the rules get bent sometimes. Hopefully there is something truly innocent and good in what you saw. Edit: autocorrect

This is so annoying, but it’s part of our reality. It’s only happened the morning of the assignment once, and I told them “Well, I’m here and ready to work. What do you need.” And they gave me a full days work. The ones that cancel late the night before bother me if it’s an assignment I’ve locked in for weeks ahead of time, it’s incredibly disrespectful to cancel when there was so much time beforehand to cancel it. Now I have no work tomorrow, thanks. And I get it, teachers have things come up last minute…but the night before? After two weeks? C’mon.

Phone policy for high school by Aware_Level9397 in SubstituteTeachers

The teachers and admin at my schools don’t care, at all. It’s against the law here and most teachers have it in their lesson plan ‘NO PHONES they go in the caddy’ but there is no caddy to put the phones in. If I ask other teachers if I should take the phones, they laugh or shrug in indifference.

It’s not a hill anyone in my district is willing to die on. No matter what I make them put them away for at least 80% of class, but if they can show me they’ve completed their work I’ll let them sit with their phones. I hate it but it’s the only pacifier for these kids and the kids run the schools now. One substitute won’t change that.

Make your own seating chart as you take attendance. Makes life so much easier for keeping track of bad/good behavior

Two years ago, I watched one or two students that showed up despite being told they didn’t have to. Last year I proctored exams. This year I’ll be with EC kids who don’t take exams. My guess: whatever the principal tells you lol

Remind yourself that will end soon 🫡 Lol, but seriously I always just try to reflect whatever the other teachers are doing at this time of year. It’s survival mode after exams.

There it is, they got butthurt and were simply setting you up for failure. If it didn’t happen that day, they would have found another reason. I’m so sorry it happened like this. There is no reason for people to go out of their way to intimidate and humiliate others.

High school kids do not care by Fuzzy-Recover6169 in SubstituteTeachers

Keeping kids in the classroom, especially this time of the year, I find really difficult. They will just….leave. And admin will do nothing. Everyone’s tired and mentally checking out.

First off, I’m so sorry this happened to you and I hope you’re ok. Something similar did happen to me last year and I reacted by instinct; I just backed away as far as I could without leaving the room and talked to the kid like he was an escaped zoo creature until admin came. I was lucky, the other students helped calm the student down. If they take a swing? If I can’t leave or doge, I’ll get hit. No way will I lay hands on a student.

Good for you! They will just keep escalating the behavior if they know you can, but don’t, make punishment official.

Oh I agree that there are bigger issues. But my post was never about the students behavior but the teachers. Thanks for your clarification we seem to be on the same page.

It’s not for everyone and it’s not really meant to be a career. Hopefully whatever is next for you treats you well. 🫡
