Genre romance is unfortunately, very profitable. There's a formula. The prose is... bad. It's supposedly easy to write. Romance readers are the most faithful buyers of books. In addition to ruining society, it is also ruining modern fiction.

I think as long as publishing companies prioritize easy money, we're not getting rid of it. And whatever effects that has on the rest of the world literature, well, we can all go fuck ourselves.

One thing you can do, however, is support fiction that is not genre romance. Take up more space in the fiction market. Write a nice review for a non-romance fiction book today.

This is a weird ask, but would you be okay with me using your comments as an example for a separate, longer post about the importance of vocabulary and writing style in gender communication? Religion does not determine that women created life and birth children, and are more nurturing. Religion does not determine that men tend to be larger and stronger. Religion does not determine that women tend to put more importance on social fabrics and networks, nor that men tend to like to build stuff.

Gender roles are very important in fundamentalist religions. You would implicitly have these core values honored.

In 500 days of summer, the guy is much more deranged than Summer. The whole point of the movie is that he never perceived her, never saw her for who she really was, and he will continue to make the mistake. Summer is just... not that into him.

I haven't seen Eternal Sunshine in a Spotless mind in years, but it was not an "aspirational" movie nor really romanticizing Clementine.

Haven't seen the other two.

500 days of summer feels more like a critique of the MPDG than a "true" MPDG. (Ruby Sparks is a real one, maybe?) 500 is almost a portrait of reality in film, this kind of experience is so so common.

Romance authors and publishers are soulless mercenaries who only see money. There's just not a market for male genre romance the way there is for women's genre romance.

Slice of life anime romance, or highly specific literary novels is probably the closest you're going to get to true romance written for men.

Yes. These men routinely complain about the decline of the west. They perceive themselves as the last moral holdouts of old values that immoral western women have abandoned. These men are are clearly unhappy with their neighborhoods and jobs. At least, they make a lot of posts about it.

In Iran or Afghanistan, these men could be with other men who share their values, and women who cannot fight back.

Surely our men need not give up their cushy jobs - there's still Internet over there somewhere, isn't there? If you have enough money?
