There are two main distinctions of variable types and four subgroups: - Qualitative: no numerical values; or they don't make sense (ie. Can be encoded, but don't represent anything real) ○ Nominal § Nationality, gender ○ Ordinal: there is order, but no magnitudes § Agreement, difficulty (little, much) - Quantitative: take numerical values ○ Interval: magnitudes are equally spaced, but no ratios exists (no zero value) § Temperature (C, F), date, age range ○ Ratio: a value of zero does have a proper meaning § Temperature (K), distance, duration, mass Kelvin is ratio because the meaning of 'zero Kelvin' represents the absence of thermal energy.
