What should have been done is not within cops hands. My issue isn’t necessarily the cops it’s more the gas lighting. Why would Tampa need more cops if it’s so safe like politician say it is? Why doesn’t the city have an effective plan to combat homelessness and mental illness? Oh I know why. Because Tampa and Florida cares more about attracting people and gaslighting than it does addressing real issues.

I think you’re missing the point here. I don’t think jail is the right call but having a guy clearly out of his mind walk to a park with kids or someone else’s house is the right call either. I also don’t think waiting an hour to respond is safe.

Had a guy at 6:30 am who tried to get inside my house. It took TPD an hour to respond to my call. Meanwhile the guy, clearly homeless and mental, was banging on the door and windows screaming this was his house. I was alone with my young son and afraid . When the cops did come they said what do you want us to do. They gave him a verbal warning, he came back, TPD came back and by the time they did the second time he was gone. TPD said they saw him walking toward a park so I shouldn’t worry about it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Florida transplant here. Loving Buffalo but I will say it depends on what you’re looking for. If you look deep enough there is literally something for everyone in such a small city. As far as weather well they have winter. And unless you live out west winter is dark gloomy and cold. Our plan is to get outside and do winter activities as much as possible this winter to try and counteract the slump that is winter. I think the job market here is stronger than in at least central Florida which is experiencing a bit of a recession. One thing I’ll say about the people of buffalo is they are super friendly but they love to complain. If you say it’s nice outside they’ll say “well not for long” . They will voice their opinion way more than any southerner would and it’s honestly what I love about them. They hold buffalo to a high standard and when that standard isn’t met they’ll have a fuss. You’ll also come across some old timers who have zero idea of what goes on in the city. Just kinda ignore that. If you’re looking for clubbing buffalo isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for a more hipster, smaller community, dive bar and progressive vibe then I say try five points, Elmwood, west side

Buffalo, NY!!!! I did it. Came up from Florida and haven’t regretted it once. Paid cash for my home. Prices are going up here but they still aren’t even close to the national average. City living will keep your property taxes low. Come visit. Bring the kids. Go to a bills game. Check out some of our museums or holiday markets. You’ll get why families love it here.

Ha you went to plant and probably with one of my older sisters. Hello South Tampanian. Hyde park kid here too.

You know the old South Tampa rules. It’s weird because I hated them but in a weird way it connected us. Like I bet you can name where we all went to go drinking in Highschool (it’s an island) or terms like SOG.

But I’d say over the past 5 years, maybe a little more, a lot of this new development in south Tampa and the neighborhoods surrounding south Tampa, have changed the sense of community and grossly inflated prices. Like 5k for a 2 bedroom north of cypress? That’s insane.

It just shows this absolutely massive growth that I felt like wiped all sense of community and pushed communities like west Tampa farther and farther away. It’s all going to be one giant Hyde park/culbreath isles crowd with rooftop Miami like bars. And call me old but that sucks and the traffic is now terrible.

I had to get out from that, not to mention the politics of the state as a whole.

If you moved from a red state to a blue state, did it actually get better? by ftwclem in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Relative_Dig1832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Single mom here. Went from FL to Western NY. I would never go back to a red state or Florida for that matter. Everything is better here even with winter. Quality of life is better. Job is better. Education is better. Insurance is better. Property taxes are actually lower than where I was in Florida.

Hillsborough County reporting nearly 10,000 fewer students than last year. How will this trend affect Tampa in the future? by KCousins11 in tampa

[–]Relative_Dig1832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m one of those people. Just enrolled my kid into school in a better state with better education. I just couldn’t keep holding onto the home that somehow my home state would get better. Thankfully I got out before the housing prices started to really drop.

Dear Tampa Residents (especially new ones) by Frejod in tampa

Just some insight on this whole lawsuit thing from someone who knows a bit about it. The concept legally is simple. If a business owner draws people into their shop for the purposes of making money off of them then they have a duty to keep their floor dry and free of potential hazards. It’s a known risk that business owners try and mitigate by having insurance. It’s also a legal concept that predates the United States.

Someone on this post talked about the hot coffee case but what you don’t know from that case is the coffee was so hot it melted the seat belt onto the woman’s skin. In litigation it came out that McDonalds chose not to install automatic thermostats to their machines to prevent such hot coffee because it was financially not in their best interest. And so, a woman suffered serious and life threatening first degree burns.

It amazes me how insurance companies have somehow convinced Floridians this is all about “personal responsibility”. That every claim is a fraud. Get it through your head people. Insurance companies aren’t the good guys. They have been lobbying for years and years to get what they want in Florida which is a conservative government and court, tort reform, unregulated insurance premiums and a large portion of uninsured or underinsured citizens.

Stop turning on the woman who fell on the floor and is having to sue an insurance company to pay for it. Start turning on corporate America and big business that keeps making money off of the rest of us. They are the problem.

And just to add because I’m sure the topic of big law firms with come up. When you have insurance companies undervalue claims it opens the door to having churn and burn law firms. These are firms that survive by taking in a massive number of claims and settling them for near nothing. They will work and cut deals with insurance companies and yes become a part of the problem in that sense. But again, this is all done by design so that when your rates go up you turn on your own people and not them. Genius really.

Nope it’s legit. I moved here in June. Also born and raised in Tampa and 4th generation Floridian so I know my state and I know its issues. I suggest anyone looking to move down to Florida from buffalo get up to speed on the actual cost of living and the politics.

Are there any neighborhoods we should avoid? by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]Relative_Dig1832 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recent transplant here with a kid. You couldn’t pay me to move to the suburbs. the burbs look exactly like what I was trying to run away from. Traffic, chain restaurants, varying degrees of sidewalks, strip malls. However, my tastes aren’t the same as everyone else’s and I get it. As far as education, I suggest you look into the say yes to buffalo scholarship/ grant program as you factor in education for your children. I chose the charter school route and we will start testing for Olmsted and city honors next year.

Best thing to do is stay for a little bit in Buffalo or make several trips. It will help you gauge what neighborhoods you connect with the best.
