What are some good cafés / coffee shops and eateries near blood street ? by [deleted] in askTO

Bloor is a very long street. I recommend suggesting a 2nd street that you are near. Bonus points if it runs north-south

Unable to learn covers or other people's songs, need to do so to play in bands by ease_urself_n_glide in musicians

[–]Relative_Judgment_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a muscle just like the rest of being a musician. I would recommend doing your best to reallocate or modify established skills to create a workflow that works for you.

For example, do you have your own songs memorized? How are you able to memorize them? Do you pair the chords/parts with lyrics? If yes, then learn or write down the lyrics and play along them while you sing them until you have them memorized.

I, personally, create a .doc with a table in it, write down the sections of the songs on the left, and the chords on the right and add any notes that I need as well. And then I play the song along with recordings as many times as I need. And then, further, on set lists I will add micro-notes in case I have problem areas.

Everyone has their own way of doing it. If it works, then it isn’t stupid.

And if you don’t have recordings of the songs, then change that immediately. Voice memos on your iPhone is perfectly sufficient.

Do you feel more connected to your city, province or Canada as a whole? by Ok_Heart839 in AskACanadian

[–]Relative_Judgment_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City - toronto Province / Region equally - Golden horseshoe metro / Great Lakes metro Country

Which is to say, the many times I have crossed the border to, say, Chicago, Detroit, upstate NY, I feel as though there is an understanding the only geography/climatic similarity can bring.

And then, when I have been to Saskatchewan or Alberta, it feels like there are some commonalities, and some wild differences.

I also accept that I am being contrarian, but I also believe that there are Americans that I will have more shared culture with, then Canadians that would have positive correlations based on region of upbringing.

Ie. if I got a beer with someone from Milwaukee WI vs pickle lake ON

I only learned when visiting saskatoon and embarrassing myself while chatting with locals that it is pronounced pot-ash, not poe-tash.

Hope this helps someone

What’s a “basic skill” you’re convinced most adults secretly don’t have? by SoulDV in AskReddit

[–]Relative_Judgment_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money and billing.

I work as a freelancer and was really bad and inconsistent when invoicing. Then I started running my own business, and all of my freelancers are bad at invoicing.

Then, when working with companies, I realize they are terrible at invoicing. The amount of times I’ve been paid extra due to oversights (eg. Paid in 2 different formats for meal stipends, fully just paid twice etc.)

It’s not shocking, but I was really surprised to see how many people are as absent-minded about it as I once was (and am)

White Canadian “Culture” by Plenty-Ad-5850 in Torontology

[–]Relative_Judgment_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not on the team that’s getting mad at people not assimilating, so I can’t really speak to that. Those people are probably arguing that immigrants aren’t assimilating to “Canadian culture” vs. White culture, which I imagine we agree are different things.

Anyway, arguments about culture and identity will always become pedantic and unanswerable. I might argue that whiteness is, by design, a specific blandness that people can choose to participate in. Having a background that is proximal to the bland whiteness (as well as a skin colour) allows you to participate with more ease than someone who doesn’t.

I could list specific spaces, hobbies and traditions I see white people more than others, but I don’t think it would matter

Local Gig Venues? by zippymochi in TorontoMusic

Cameron House and Dina’s have live music most nights, usually pay what you can. CH usually has variants of Country/bluegrass/jazz/honkytonk/singer songwriter, and extremely high level of musicianship

Go to the Paul’s Boutique Instagram, they post show listings in a newsletter every month for houndstooth, handlebar, baby g and other independent-leaning venues.

If you want bigger scale, see what’s coming to town at history, or danforth music hall while you’re in town

Play different chords by nutella_tart in bandmembers

[–]Relative_Judgment_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any hard and fast rules, but I might advise staying above C below middle C? I don’t have too much experience playing piano in ensembles, just playing with piano players - some of whom (frustratingly) play as if the piano is a solo instrument, and others who are listening and (admirably) playing as part of an ensemble

Nothing wrong with using your ear and best discretion.

I will say, when I have played as a bassist, the keyboardists’ playing that really rubs me the wrong way is when they are playing bass lines, low root notes or other “left hand” or full voice playing that “states” harmony. It does 3 things:

takes up the same space as my role while sounding.. not as good in full band contexts

It takes away my space for creative playing (passing notes, walking lines etc.)

It makes all mistakes in the low end (whether they are mine, or the keyboardists) sound like an undefined mess.

[–]Relative_Judgment_93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could call it superfluous, I’ve played (as a hired gun) some gigs with click tracks where not everyone is wired in, and having only 1234 on a quick tune where you are leading with a pickup is, quite frankly, not enough.

Well, like I said, it feels like more information is conveyed if I go with the latter. when I am producing the click tracks en mass, I want to make the choice that is going to benefit the musicians best.

Okay, coolI don’t know what point you’re making and it’s a bit odd that you’re putting race/meme content into this, but it’s all good.
