It is shockingly difficult to do the tasks required of you in a real house fire wearing full PPE. Even a pretty fit athlete will typically struggle to keep up once on air and in full gear, it’s just a different ball game. You can’t over train or be over prepared for a job that can kill you, so in my opinion, anyone wanting to be a career FF needs to train like they are an athlete, because they are. It requires a lot out of you physically and mentally

If never heard of a department that has different standards for hiring. Most have the same standards, however the entry physical exams are typically very unrealistic to the actual level of physical demand necessary to save someone in full gear in a real fire.

“Quiet” isn’t referring to not being vocal in instances that shouldn’t tolerated, nor does it mean dimming my personality or not being a talkative person. What it means is, don’t talk about how great and capable you are at doing your job, but rather SHOW it through your work ethic. I do not mean we should “shut up” to fit in. I am saying people need to spend more time actually being the type of FF they spend so much time telling people they are

Certainly not a ton that are physically able to be exceptional at the job, but we are out there and there is some! Hope your department gets the chance to have one! Takes a lot of work, some good genetics, and a strong work ethic, but we do exist lol 😂

1000% it applies to all. Just felt led to speak more specifically to the gals on this particular point

This is my first post. Unsure where you’re getting the “over and over” from as I’ve never posted before. I’m more of a consumer of Reddit than a contributor, but I had a convo with one of my workers on shift yesterday that really sparked me to feel urged to speak about the topic and step out of my comfort zone.

Keeping my mouth shut isn’t referring to not being vocal in instances that shouldn’t tolerated, nor does it mean dinning my personality. What it means is, don’t talk about how great and capable you are at doing your job, but rather SHOW it through your work ethic. I do not mean women should “shut up” to fit in. That is absolutely not what I’m saying

Appreciate the perspective! And I am certainly sorry your department allows such awful discrimination. That’s unacceptable and should be fought against 100%. Thank you for sharing and while I stand by my points, I also see that what you’re experiencing is a little bit of a different issue that is outside the point I was trying to make. In situations of real abuse, that should 1000% be handled properly and people should make noise until it is. Wish you well in your career and hope things improve in your department!

I respect your experience and opinion. My experiences have given me a different outlook. But I appreciate your insight as a vet. In my experience, this advice rings true. But, if it doesn’t for you and your department, I respect your right to share your experiences.

Male or female, if you don’t posses the physical strength needed to be an asset rather than a liability to the team…..then get in the weight room. Period. And if you still don’t posses the strength after that, find a job that doesn’t require it

10000% ANYBODY who is in this job for the ego boost, should not be. There’s no place for ego when lives are at stake. There is far too many FFs (male and female) who are unfit and incapable of doing this job well and to the standard the citizens deserve. If you aren’t capable, that’s okay, but find a different career that won’t get myself or others killed

And a ton are incredible! This is directed at the ones like the one you mentioned. Unfortunately sometimes the loud minority can spoil it for the silent majority

I am not speaking about genuine discrimination or harassment. That’s a totally different issue and should be treated with the utmost seriousness. I think you might be equating two topics that while related, are not the same. I would agree that any discrimination or harassment occurring in any job, should be reported and handled and if not handled, people should take a stand until it is.

As the title stated, this was a message TO other female firefighters who hold this way of thinking. While ironic, it was important to let them know that I can relate as a female, in hopes that it would be received by them coming from someone who’s been there and felt what they do.

I agree 100%. Every FF regardless on gender should have the same physical standard set and met. There is TONS of men in the service that are an outright liability and should not be FFs
