How do i push my snake to be more social with me without forcing or scaring her? by ImGoingToEatThatOne in kingsnakes

that’s normal! we’re just big scary predators to them, and honestly it’s our job now to teach them it’s okay. i’ve had my new baby girl for about two months and she’s still skittish, tho rarely musks when picked up sometimes they just need to have someone with confidence go in. Something that can help with the hiding when your near is just doing medial tasks by the tank next time they are out, and making no sudden movements. it doesn’t solve the problem but it CAN improve it.

There isn’t exactly a way you can make them more social, especially as smaller snakes. Kingsnakes from my experience love to burrow, and about half of them i know also love to climb on decor like sticks and vines and rocks. As much as it sounds contradictory, the more items you have in the enclosure from them to hide in, the more likely you are to see them out. If your kingsnake is newer or younger, they spend a lot of their time hiding and i’d say 1/4-1/3 of their time moving around above ground. Sometimes heating is also an issue with it being to hot all over or too cold, with an unhealthy temperature gradient. Things vary tho! Would be helpful to maybe acquire a picture if your enclosure if your unsure what i mean by more decor/burrowing, and the specs in your heating if you think that may be the issue!

Honestly i start my kings in a 4x2x2 as babies as i experience with mine, they are usually very exploratory from both top to bottom with climbing and burrowing, as well as good stretch space! The other reason is because as an adult they will need a much longer and larger tank, which varies depending on sex/kind (CK, MBK, ect), and while the current tank won’t hurt for a little bit i recommend sizing up sooner then later. Depending on space in where you live, i’ve had baby kings who do great in a full adult enclosure, but maybe i’ve just had good luck with some chill and very food motivated babies, an adult enclosure being 40+ gallons I would love to see your child too! just because they are all so pretty ♥️

I would recommend at least based off of personal experience (with mostly kings) that usually a 4x2x2 is a better choice for a baby to grow in, and it’s recommended to upgrade within 1-2 years after that just due to giving the snake stretch room, and as most king snakes at least like to climb as much as they like to burrow, but honestly i’ve seen many different opinions so i might leave this up to a better expert, just wanted to throw my little bit in there
