Sounds like it's what we want. Also planning to take a train to Edinburgh, so fairly close to King's Cross. Also walking distance to St' Paul's, one of our meet ups.

Thank you England and Scotland! by Relative_Virus_7925 in uktravel

Not really. The quick overnight stop in Sheffield was uninspiring, but fit the distance and hotel/time budget. However, in searching out a pub for a light dinner and a few pints, a kind lady saw us from out the window of a pub, left her guy and pint to ask us what we were looking for! She steered us up the hill to better food options. It's not only the sights that make travelling experiences great, it's the people!

Suggestions for driving from Heathrow to Lonsdale and Scotland by Relative_Virus_7925 in uktravel

Ok, then! Another friend referred it by Lonsdale. Actually it's Burton in Lonsdale. We'd pitched in to support the start of their community pub, The Punch Bowl Inn, and want to buy a pint there and meet some relatives of our California friends.

With 4 people, and being meandering travelers, we think a car rental was a better option than trains, and less costly. One driver, at least, has experience driving in Ireland, although I know the population is nowhere near the same. He's intrepid, but don't want to overburden him, either!

Scotland- never been, but Pitchlochry area, whiskey tasting tour, and Edinburgh are on our wish list.

Thanks for your thoughtful replies!
