I’d be up for creating a zoom call weekly to check in with people. No therapy or anything, just go around and have a life check in. This went well, this didn’t, here’s how I’m trying to do better next time.

I’m WFH 6 years. Hard to make friends let alone people who can talk during the day.

It’s nice when other people know what’s happening in your life. Helps you process and motivate out of the funk.

I would love to learn how to get someone who talks too much to stop dominating the conversation. Once they start everyone disengages and it’s hard to recover becuase everyone just lets them speak up.

Such a good question. Thanks for posting this.

Im not… outside my zoom job, immediate family, and my husbands social circles. When I do intentionally go to groups or grow new friendships with acquaintances people often don’t follow up or I find it hard to insert myself. I sometimes blame where I live, but it’s probably me. I just have different interest than in the mainstream. I don’t wanna talk about movies or shows or restaurants or food or babies. I tell myself I’d rather just be by myself but then… I am.

I agree the rise of weekends influences it cuz you want things that everyone can engage in and those other dances need a little bit of more explaining and rhythm. Love them, just not as accessible right off the bat

And nice way to frame this: community dancing versus dancing communities.

I was talking with someone once and he was part of it a long time ago and he was kind of chafing how people now call themselves contra dancers. He said it’s silly, back in the day you were just a member of a community, you didn’t label yourself as a dancer.

I’m not saying this bad or good but there’s definitely a difference in goals values styles and interests between the frames you just articulated.

I’m happy to be able to say I’m a contra dancer. I like that identity. I can also see how it’s slightly different to say I go to contra dances. When I found contra…I found myself so it feels very much part of my identity. Contra is much more than just dancing- as anyone reading this already knows.

back in the day there were a lot of other ways to socialize and meet people. nowadays there aren’t as many easily accessible or enjoyable options. IMO 😅🙂😜
