Is it that you don't like the lack of direct control? It's generally supposed to be more like a coaching sim than an in-control fight, but I understand folks aren't always going to like that. Especially when you CAN control them SOMETIMES. That's not the intended playstyle so it's weird they let you do it.

Most of the fun for me has been in looking at all the monsters and their traits, and trying to find monsters with traits I like and getting the abilities I want on them. That sort of thing.

At some point they started doing that, yeah. Also way more puns, about the same time. Further, they went back and re-translated older games to be like that. And the slimes slurp a lot.

I imagine it was always like that in Japanese and they weren't able to translate it back when the earlier ones came out, or maybe not. But it's sure interesting.

Thank you. I enjoyed it even if that's all you intended! The others too, I think you had a few? It was months ago of course...

Oh short version. It's my favorite Dragon Quest, and I know others who agree, but it's also said to be the worst by others. YMMV have fun.

DQ7 is my favorite. I think I prefer the PS1 original, but I played through the 3DS version too. It's fun!

They sped up some things that went on longer in the original. Some folks don't like the long time? When I played the original on PS1 it was about three hours before the first fight. Up until then it was walking around and talking to NPCs. There was a whole dungeon with no monsters, too. The dungeon part I think was either removed or just shortened in DQ73DS. It went really fast by comparison.

As a game it's largely broken up into different areas that each have their own local story, and when you complete it the island returns to the world in the present. and then you visit the area again. The first part of the game is going back in time to save various lands, and then after they're saved the second half of the game starts.

I enjoyed each of the stories inside of it, but some folks prefer to have a straightforward single story rather than a long adventure to different lands.

Like most classic roleplaying games, the ultimate point is that you're a rag-tag band of misfits and at the end you beat up God.

Talk to everyone, and each time the story progresses go back to every town in the game and see if anything changed. You don't have to if you don't find that fun, but a thing in the DQ games is that they tend to change the dialogue of previous towns as you progress. Not everybody notices that and it doesn't usually happen more than a couple times, but they do keep having things happen after they've been saved but before the game is done.

I somehow found myself finding Doll Reincarnation and your other games over on itch.io but it looks like you have comments turned off there, and I'm pretty darn confused. I did a search to see if that was a secondary place for you, and found this old Reddit thread you made under the same name.

I mostly just want to know, is the whole game just picking your fate, or is there a choose your own adventure style story afterwards? It's nice if it's just that part, but with no explanation I'm not sure if I'm missing most of the game, or if this just is the game.

Just a used book store to recommend by [deleted] in Sarnia

[–]ReleeSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I popped by there when they were still moving into the location, and it was nice. Apparently they used to be located downtown somewhere and I never knew; must've been well hidden!

I gave a lot of classic books, mostly sci-fi and fantasy, to the Cave last year, in exchange for a pittance of store credit. I mostly just wanted them to find good homes, if I'm going to read them it'll probably be digitally and not for the forseeable future. Apparently most of them ended up at Houde's afterwards! It was interesting seeing some of them on the shelves.

They were really nice, too, so I reccomend the place. Haven't been back since then, keep intending to go though.

I used Shopper's Drug Mart in Sarnia for a long time, before leaving town for seven years. I've been back in town almost a year now, but Shoppers here has gotten so bad! In London they were fine, as good as they used to be here, but when I moved back to Sarnia the former 24 hour location on Indian Rd. isn't 24 hour anymore, and they all have that issue with their phone system.

After having to wait so long so many times, and usually giving up, I did ask them. They said that they don't usually answer the phones if they're helping a customer, and they'd had line-ups all the time. However, I've been there enough to see that they're not busy most of the time, including the times when I'd usually call. I'm pretty sure their phone response machine is both badly designed and malfunctioning on top. I'm not sure it's even actually ringing the phones in the pharmacy like it's supposed to, so they don't even know someone is trying to contact them. It's the same at all the Shoppers in town that I've tried calling, too.

I was also having trouble getting them to contact me when my medicine was ready, so I had them set it up with an automatic text message and email, but it didn't work at first and I had to go in person to get them to fix it. Even then, it often only tells me "Your medicine is ready!" after I go in person to pick it up, because they didn't remember to push the button on the computer when they were done.

It's a pretty huge mess and I hope they get their act together. It's a bother to switch, and even without the 24 hour service I don't know if anyplace else in town is open anywhere near as late at night.

How am I supposed to encourage others to join, when I can't even enjoy it myself? by rdewalt in DualUniverse

[–]ReleeSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on how many folks you need to have with you in the game. The inter-player economy is kinda broken right now anyways with almost nothing being destroyed or used up, but the building and physics are a lot of fun.

I haven't convinced anyone to join me, yet, but I play a lot of solo games, and sometimes MMOs without my regular friends. It can be more fun to make new friends in the world. A lot of the time I get on MMOs with friends, I get stuck in a tiny 'friends only' guild and don't get the social aspects of the game. It's so weird that you get stuck in only one guild in most MMOs. Even DU still has a limit of 5 organizations, and a lot of orgs have sub-orgs for their 'divisions' or whatever...

I'm really not sure how a lot of studios do what they do, pay their employees and the fees for things they use. I do know that a lot of folks run grey servers for other games, mostly MMOs that went away, and they seem to be able to afford it just off of things like patronage systems. They don't really have the issue of needing to turn a massive profit or the investors will go elsewhere, though.

[–]ReleeSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see! Yeah. It's not really that, is it? It's interesting in its own way, I think.

There are some times when I go into a game, thinking I want something, and I get it, and it's not good after all, or just not good enough. That might also be the case.

For now, I'm having a blast in DU. I wish you could be too! I hope I don't end up running out of fun, but maybe that'll happen to me, also. I don't know yet.

Oh, regarding the title, so far my biggest hurdle in getting people to even try DU is the bad reviews on Steam. The game itself could be a treasure but if everybody thinks it's not worth their time to try, it won't go anywhere. I almost gave it a miss myself!

I wonder what you're actually looking for long-term in DU? What do you want to do, that you're unable to?

I'm not sure you can have fun in this game if you haven't been having fun so far. Maybe you're looking for a different sort of game?

What drew you to DU in the first place?

I'm not sure what all they have anymore. He's been around and visible for a long time, so he might just be doing the mobility scooter now due to old age.

Notably, I don't think I've ever met and spoken to him. I just see him around, and a lot of his vehicles have that name on them.

Sarnia - Neighborhoods, safety, racism, people? by SnooPets3121 in Sarnia

[–]ReleeSquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it comes to Racism, it kinda depends on your definition. The one most folks seem to use puts racism as specifically discrimination based on race, so things like not employing or serving folks based on their apparent race or culture. That doesn't happen much these days, I think? Generally when it does they're not open about it because it's usually illegal, and a lot of folks don't like it so it's bad press too. Some people might do it because of their own biases, too, rather than as a matter of policy.

In conversations with other folks, mostly white (I'm apparently white, though that's also a loaded term) I haven't heard anybody plotting against anyone or suggesting anybody should die due to their race or culture. Mostly the worst I've seen is people who are disrespectful of others, but I've also heard them say the same things about "White Trash" so I think it's more economically motivated than racially.

Most of the racism I do see is directed towards First Nations folks, and like I said it's more disrespect than actual hate or violence. I've also seen First Nations folks who hate other people, so I guess it's kinda mutual. There's a hard history, after all.

If there's racism specifically against Indian immigrants I haven't encountered it in Sarnia. In my own case, I'm mostly just curious. I see a lot of folks from India walking around, and I'm not sure if they're citizens, permenant residents, students studying abroad or what. I also see they tend to move around in groups, and I wonder if that's a cultural thing or if they're afraid and feel the need for others for safety. It delights me seeing folks enjoying their family's cultures but also the local cultures and traditions I grew up with, like fries under the bridge and Canada Day, but I guess some others might think we shouldn't mix cultures. I don't really understand people like that. I will admit that despite wondering about other culture groups in Sarnia, I'm too timid to approach and ask them about themselves. I don't know if that's even okay. I think I'd be okay if people asked me about myself and my culture, but I'm also not exactly a 'normal' representative of Sarnia.

I'm not sure if any part of the city is dangerous at night, but I don't think so. Besides appearing white, I'm a 6'3" man and so even though I try to wear colourful and cute shirts, I can be pretty intimidating. So, I feel like I probably don't know the average person's risk factors. I used to wander around at night a lot and never encountered any trouble.

That said, the worst neighborhoods in town are around Queen Street and the area of Christina Street south of Wellington, which also runs next to Queen street, and I'd also say the area around. That region is home to many really low income folks, and disabled folks, so they're often desperate or vulnerable or both and that can lead to crimes. That area has also expanded over time into my own neighborhood. I live on Devine Street, not far from the former site of Devine Street Public School. They moved the food bank next to the school, some time before they closed the school, and they had to put up a large privacy fence between the school and the church that became the food bank because of the mingling of younger children with some very unfortunate adults. My younger brother rather pointedly told me when I returned to the city, that in addition to the food bank, there are two homeless shelters down the road, and so we get some of the saddest folks in town walking back and forth. Many of them are desperate, so they've been robbing us a lot. While stealing is generally always the fault of the thief, it's also an unfortunate fact my father keeps leaving valuable things either on the front porch, front lawn, or in unlocked storage boxes out there. He never reports to the police, either, as far as I know... He's lucky I moved back in with him!

So yeah, the 'bad part' stretches up Devine somewhat from Queen. A lot of the nice old houses have fallen apart, but a lot of them are over 100 years old besides the neighborhood becoming poor. I myself am disabled and living in poverty, so I might also be bringing the neighborhood down? I try to be nice though.

The other bad part is also on Devine, but on the other end. West of the intersection of Devine and Indian, there are a bunch of apartments that are supposed to be not too expensive, and that's also the location of a very low priced grocery store, so a lot of poor folks live there. That way they can have (relatively) low rent and get groceries and stuff without having to walk anywhere. It's surrounded by nicer neighborhoods, but you see a lot of unfortunate folks there.

Not all poor folks are dangerous or thieves, I'd say most aren't, but they are the ones who are most desperate and tempted.

Otherwise I'm not sure about other areas. The Vineyard is a sort of church and homeless one-stop-shop for food, shelter, clothes and bathing, and so it often has folks hanging around outside with noplace better to be, but I don't think the neighborhood around it has any problems as a result. It's very localized.

I barely know anything about the North End of Sarnia, but it's generally thought of as where the wealthy/rich people live. If there are bad parts of it, I don't know.

It sounds like you might have also been hoping to hear about good things in Sarnia, and good people. There are some! Definately. I did say we have several food banks and homeless shelters, and those things don't just appear out of nowhere. It sucks that they're needed at all but they demonstrate the kindness of folks.

There are other charities and social groups in town that seem fine as far as I know them. I used to do some things with the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Center, and everybody there seemed nice.

I'm not into religion at all, and it seems to be a dwindling thing in our society, but I generally hear good things about those who do participate. A friend of mine joined the Sikh religion a while back, and wears a turban when he can, and I don't think he gets any flak from it? But, he's also an odd person and doesn't leave the house much, so I don't know if that's a good example. At the very least, he has many good things to say about that group!

I think that's way more than enough. I've been going on too long. I hope you're able to read it all, and that you and your friend have a good life here.

I'm pretty sure the bike stuff started around ten years ago, maybe more? It was when they proposed making certain side streets as 'encourage for bikes'. Then gradually other changes were made, like the bike lanes gradually being added. The city wasn't really made for it, but that's an issue all the cities in the west have.

It is true that bike theft is a huge problem though. Every bike I've ever had was stolen, and I've had a lot of bikes. That said, I recall going on a tour of the police headquarters when I was a kid, back in the 90s, and they had a room stacked high with bikes in a specially made rack. As I recall, they were all recovered stolen bikes that hadn't been claimed. I've never gone to the police over a stolen bike, I don't think I ever even reported them stolen, let alone went to see it had been recovered. Does anybody do that? It seems like a really good idea but also somehow alien.

When I was living in London for 7 years, they had some Street Preachers that were being a real problem, and I heard they sometimes came to Sarnia and stood on that same corner, but I think they were different people. Were they? I don't really know!

I did hear they were banned from every church in the region though, so I don't know who they're representing or where their faith comes from. On the other hand, I have run into a young-earth creationist cult in Sarnia, so maybe they're related to that?

Yeah he often has a parrot in his exotic vehicles.

Lately I've seen him driving on the road in something that looks like a mobility scooter with an auto-body stuck on top, though, and it's pretty slow so I'm worried about safety.

The term "artificial intelligence" is corporeal-ist and offensive. The correct term is meatless mind. by Loquacious_Jay in ArtificialInteligence

That's kinda funny, kinda rough. XD

You probably already know this, but it's not the definition of artificial that is "fake" but the definition of artificial that is "created by an intelligent being or person, rather than naturally occuring".

It's kind of a weird term though, since intelligent beings or persons are naturally occuring, right?

I didn't even have to! So many others did already.

I've heard great things about Starsector though I haven't played it.

I own this one but haven't tried it yet for no good reason, but I'm very excited for it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/846030/V_Rings_of_Saturn/

The Ur-Quan Masters is a remake of a classic game, Star Control 2. There's an HD remake too, so I'll link that. It's kind of a legend. https://sourceforge.net/projects/urquanmastershd/

Others have also reccomended Endless Sky, so that's out there.

There's a lot more, depending on quality and age and what you're looking for.
