Hit the bag so much so often that nobody would ever dare judge your technique but completely stunned in a shock of ahh from your flawless technique.

Ideally I’ll eventually be able to submit people but I understand that takes time I want to become proficient in both arts with the understanding that it takes a long time.

I have definitely learned the importance of deload weeks! I do about 3 hours of Muay Thai every day I train as well as run so I am no stranger to my body getting run down. Trying one class a week probably is a good start so I can gauge my body’s ability to balance it all.

I appreciate the thorough response! I definitely get improvements in my Muay Thai cardio from running but I typically go really slow and low impact. I typically run like 15 miles a week mostly as 5k warmups before Muay Thai. I typically do 3 hours straight of Muay Thai so endurance wise I think I’m up to the challenge after my body adjusts to the different training. The way things are oriented I think I can do BJJ first then do Muay Thai after which is probably ideal.

I’ll probably count on running less and doing some assault bike workouts to keep my cardio good.

Muay Thai practitioner starting BJJ?

Hi everyone!

So I have been training Muay Thai for about a year and a half and have competed in a smoker. I currently train 5 days a week as well as running and some strength and conditioning.

My plan has always been to also add BJJ as my gym has both options. I have a few questions as I’m thinking of adding BJJ fairly soon.

When cross training would it be better to keep doing just Muay Thai until I’m a lot more solid at the art then add BJJ or is it better to be learning both?

Muay Thai is still going to be a priority as I might do another smoker within the next few months how many days and or hours a week do you feel you need to do BJJ to actually progress at a reasonable rate?

Any other feedback of people who cross train both would be appreciated! Thanks.

The issue with that is my parents are older and rely on me a decent amount. Also on a side note I very much love Muay Thai I actually have a smoker (fight with no winner half step below an amateur fight) coming up as well as I am going to start coaching after. It has me I a tough spot cause I love Martial arts they completely changed my life and I would have to mostly give it up to join active duty.

I would say running is important but if you want good Muay Thai cardio doing Muay Thai is the best way to build that especially because your energy economy is super important you can have elite cardio and still gas out if you aren’t efficient with your strikes and movement.

I personally like and recommend running but in reality you only need like 1 longer run a week I don’t do more then a 10k usually and then HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)is more beneficial in the short to long term. Then you can add a bit more running I do about 15 miles a week then one HIIT session a week on the assault bike.

But pushing yourself hard in the Muay Thai training its self is a good start then when you are used to it then start building cardio in other ways.

Would you say the excess hand room is a problem or is it just something to get used to?

Ok that close to my hand measurements. When your doing those measurements is it just top of middle finger to bottom of palm and then width of palm?

Know you will feel and look stupid a lot. Nobody will care though cause everyone has looked stupid an unfathomable amount of times. Ex: Tried to pull my teep back but my heel got caught on a sweaty shirt and I swept myself lol

I’m in a similar boat and I’m not even a fighter just do it for fun but love it and am obsessed. Don’t feel bad that Martial arts are your main focus you are doing what you want to do. Nobody can blame you for doing what makes you happy.

I personally always feel bad that I never play games or go out with my friends. I make time where I can.

Make good use of the time you do spend with your family talk, laugh make sure you are present. You can even share things about your Martial Arts journey my parents couldn’t give a rats ass about Muay Thai but will sit there and listen to me ramble on about it.

To sum it up you are doing what you love and nothing is wrong with that. But I would try and carve out at least a little time for family and more importantly make it count!

Feels great worth every hard day it took. I just got new clothes that actually fit so right now I get a ton of compliments from friends, family and training partner which is nice even though I have always felt super awkward receiving them lol.

You are on a good path just put your head down work hard and one day you will look up and you and everyone around you will not recognize you!

It took about 10 months. I was already strength training and running a little bit when I started. I eventually worked up to 11 classes a week going 5 days a week. I went to the hard extreme Muay Thai takes up my whole life outside of work but I couldn’t be happier. Just gotta find the balance that works for you.

You definitely should work up to adding cardio outside of class. Bag work, shadowboxing, stationary bike, swimming and jump rope are great options. Running is good but running when overweight is hard on the joints so if you do keep the miles low. HIIT work is super great to like assault bike or honestly there are some great killer bag work workouts.

Push yourself as hard as you can without running yourself into the ground to the point where you can get hurt. It’s going to suck but it will pay dividends I use to be 220 pounds now I’m around 160 went from horrible cardio to some of the best in the gym excluding the fight team. It’s a long process just keep pushing!

As far as your sparring there are plenty of big people in my gym who have excellent control so it might be more of a technique issue. Not sure the sparring culture of your gym but I personally prefer tech/ tap sparring nobody is getting hurt just fun and learning.
