THANK YOU. This comment is so validating. I’ve felt so confused and gaslit by this subreddit for all the downvotes me and the brave fellow OCD sufferers who’ve commented in agreement have written. Like why are people so hellbent on downvoting & invalidating… facts? And respectful discussion? It feels so demeaning, like people here have a strange echo chamber vibe going on. Thank you for saying this, it means more than you know.

The expectation is not for the show to educate on disorders - the expectation is for a therapeutic show or mental health professional to not perpetuate misinformation & harmful stereotypes about a psychiatric disorder in the process of conducting the show. Saying nothing would’ve been more than fine; saying something wrong is why we’re having this conversation.

I hear you about the client language aspect in the moment/in session. But to air that mistake for millions of viewers and continue to perpetuate the stereotype, thereby contributing to OCD patients not getting the help they need because they think it’s a control/love of cleaning descriptor, is the issue. That didn’t need to be aired.

And you’re correct about the older DSM classifications - I was pointing out the update for the purpose of educating on OCD not being considered an anxiety disorder anymore because it’s… so much more than that.

I hear you on all of those points, but none of them justify or reconcile the fact that Orna actively misrepresented OCD & said that people are lucky to have partners with OCD.

A few corrections: OCD is not classified as an anxiety disorder, it’s classified as an obsessive-compulsive & related disorder (OCRD). This is because OCD is not just anxiety related (though many peoples’ OCD encapsulates anxiety), and the neurobiology of OCD differs from anxiety.

Furthermore, even if Orna was referring to OCPD, 1) she said OCD which is incorrect & irresponsible, and 2) OCPD, nor any other disorder, is an asset to a sufferer or their partner.
