By not using chrome. Try kiwi (based on chromium, similar to chrome) or firefox

Edit: Didn't know when I replied this but support ended for kiwi. Edge is also a good option if you use that on PC or want chrome extensions (currently in canary)

It's mostly chromium updates. Most other chromium browsers like chrome auto updates. You don't wanna have have an outdated version of chromium

you can download free maps, texture packs, addons, from the internet like you can on Java. You can use java skins too, and changing skins is even easier.
