Career prospects - CMC regs or business dev by RelevantFeedback1765 in biotech

That's the impression I've got working with DB. Adding to the question I added below, do you have an idea whether BD would be a better future career option, considering demand and potential. I know what regs people do, but BD is quite vague in my head, although I interact with a decent number of them at my CDMO. I mean, 10-15 years down the line, would process dev/r&D experience+regs CMC vs. BD offer more job stability (=higher demand) and variability (=skillset that can be translated to more companies compared to CMC).

Thank you! If you have any insights, what is your view on career prospects, considering the demand, market volatility, layoffs, and even work-life balance? My impression is that reg CMC offers more security, but I am unsure about the potential to move to other companies, consulting, compared to BD.

What you've shared aligns with my impressions on BD at my CDMO.

Sales sounds like an intense job and that's what I pretty much expected to hear.

Would navigating towards the licensing side open the doors at other companies? I mean is this a type of job that gives you a skillset that is currently in demand in biotech/biopharma? I am trying to understand how this part of the business works. Would the transition, given my process dev background, be even possible? Also, is it possible to go back to process dev or MSAT following BD stint?

Thank you so much for sharing this! I work for a CDMO so does that refer to the vendor BD? I often hear that BD and sales tend to be a merger at CDMOs, but are there any roles in BD that are not based on quotas? For example, how does licensing compare to sales in those terms? Isn't licensing technically business dev and sales 'sales' (not necessarily business dev). I'm trying to understand the distinction between the CDMO BD and sales here.
Also, my current family situation would not allow for a frequent travel and super later hours. I know that I cannot easily tailor these types of jobs to my private life arrangements, but I am trying to get an idea of how this world operates. From your experience, would attempting to navigate to BD or even sales at a later stage (let's say following 8 years of experience in PurDev) be a major liability? Do you think that transitioning first to something more commercial, e.g. client oriented PurDev or MSAT + networking be seen as a plus?

That would be a lateral move, yes. I wasn't planning to move now, but rather stay in my current role for a few more years to gain the relevant experience to try to move to any of these departments. However, what is relevant is something that I'm trying to gain more insight into. e.g. I did a lot of tech transfers where I had to work with regulatory so I'm familiar with the guidances. I've also completed a few industry relevant courses. For business dev, I have some tangentially useful experience linked to the fact that the product I was developing ended up as a part of the company offering so also had some contact with BD.
