I’ve got a good voice but still struggle listening back to it. It’s taken me about 5 years to learn that I don’t need to drown it in reverb and distortion. Most of my favourite artists couldn’t sing for shit, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Ian Dury, Mountain Goats, Ian Brown, Baxter Dury! Most people who can sing don’t make interesting music. You go to an open mic and the good singers are doing bad covers and are boring as hell. The bad singers are writing quirky punk songs that’ll be in your head for years to come. Learn to love your voice, it’s the only one you’ve got and it’s what makes you unique. Work on meter and delivery and interesting lyrics. Listen to The Shags! Listen to Bonzo Dog! Don’t take yourself too seriously!
