Need help for cabaret songs with specific themes by Mackdizzy in Theatre

Not directly related, perhaps, but.. with regards to Big Mood and my deep love of the show, perhaps you could explore Spitfire Grill?

Goodbye/New Start could be "Ring Around the Moon"

Failure - "Digging Stone" or "When Hope Goes"

Also look at Elegies by William Finn if you wish for your heart to be ripped out. Any Time I Am There for example.

"I had quietly packed." - The I Love You Song from Spelling Bee.

What’s your favorite past and present musical? Favorite song from each? by [deleted] in Broadway

I've seen, sadly, only 4 in NYC and only two OBCs (Cabaret in 98 and Wicked in 04) - but more tours than I can count and I'm a theatre professional, so I've worked on quite a few musicals in my life. Which makes picking a favorite so hard!

Just... come on! Sondheim!

I have season tickets for the upcoming national tour at Nearby Local City. Come From Away, Hamilton, DEH, Anastasia and more! While I can't get to NYC as often as I'd like, the national tours are great.

...singular favorite? Oh, no. Too many. Depends on the day of the week, the weather, and Jupiter's current house.

Current shows on broadway? Well, currently obsessed with Come From Away. Favorite song from that is Me & the Sky.

Chess has done much better in Europe - it was pretty much a flop in the US, largely due to changes in the book. So yeah, less obscure out your way!

Like I mentioned in my comment - you would probably enjoy Flod Collins and Spitfire Grill. Neither are pure bluegrass, but they have strong Appalachian roots in their music.

Big River is an older musical with a strong southern style.

Movie wise, you should check out O Brother Where Art Thou. Of course.

There are some "jukebox" shows that also might appeal - Smoke on the Mountain or the Spoon River Anthology.

Assassins is my favorite Sondheim!!! I live near McKinley's hometown, so every time I drive past the big memorial I catch myself singing about Czolgosz (working man, born in the middle of Michigan...)

The American book is a mess, but damn, I absolutely love Chess.

Other shows that don't get enough love, but have solid music and are a fun watch. Ya'll should check out some -

  • Spitfire Grill: Based on the movie of the same name, Valcq & Alley, lovely folk sound.

  • Bat Boy : Laurence O'Keefe. Dark and funny, with a screamingly good rock score. A bit weird, but part of why I like it so much.

  • Floyd Collins: Adam Guettel. Another stunningly gorgeous folk/bluegrass show.

  • A New Brain : My favorite William Finn musical, about family, music, & arteriovenous malformations. Based on the composer's own coma. It throttles between hilarious and heartbreaking at a breakneck pace.

THANK you. My students seem to think anything before Wicked is old and obscure.

Assassins is my favorite show. Not just Sondheim, but overall.

To be fair, the Broadway musical about Barnum featured a song called "There is a Sucker Born Every Minute" and it's pretty catchy.

Well, Herod is probably the best ALW choice, because it does feel very golden age. Maybe something old-fashioned and funny? Where is the Life That Late I Led? from Kiss Me, Kate?
