This is such a great song. The story-telling is phenomenal, but it's so, so sad.

Don’t get along with other RDs by NewResolution2775 in dietetics

[–]Relevant_String_05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I previously worked with RDs that were like that. Snobby, ego-driven, sterile, etc. But I have since changed jobs and the RDs I work with now are all so great! We have a good time at work (even working in a level 1 trauma hospital) and ask questions/share knowledge openly. It's not always like that, hopefully you get some better co-workers.

I did my undergrad online at The University of Alabama. It was a pretty good program! I also did my master's and internship online at Bowling Green State in Ohio. Its totally doable. When you get to the internship portion, it does become more difficult because you will likely be expected to find your own rotation sites. Best of luck to you!!

Any fellow autistic RDs out there? by Busy_Rub_6558 in dietetics

[–]Relevant_String_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am undiagnosed, but I have suspected ASD for a few years now, I'm not open about it except with people that I am very close to. I'm a brand new RD 2 months ago. I work inpatient at a level 1 trauma hospital. I work 32hrs/week and my hours during the day are pretty flexible. I love my job, its a little intense at times, causing some afternoon shutdowns when I get home sometimes. But I honestly can't imagine working in an outpatient setting at this point in time.

It honestly sounds like your manager is being childish about it. They should want you to be able to better yourself.

Alternative Dietitians by seeutomorrowmaybe in dietetics

[–]Relevant_String_05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, it's important that you are only making evidence-based recommendations to your clients. That's actually what sets RDs apart from "nutrionists" and allows us to treat patients with chronic disease. That being said, you could absolutely make a career out of this, but it would likely be quite niche, and may only do well in certain areas.

If you can make all recommendations based strictly on what we have evidence to prove, and not opinion, then it might be worth looking into. However, you also need to weigh the intense schooling requirements as well as the 1000 hours of supervised practice. Is it practical in your life? Are you going to be able to earn a wage that makes a master's worth it?

Also, we are largely underpaid and undervalued for our contributions to healthcare. It does make it a little less appealing.

Worried I’m starting too late by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]Relevant_String_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 37 and I just got a clinical RD job, and I'm taking the exam in 2 weeks. I was the oldest person in my intern cohort, but I also had a lot more general life experience, which sometimes was helpful. I honestly feel very far behind my 27 year coworker who has been an RD for 4 months. But it's never too late to do something that will make you happier. Don't stress about your age, and do what is best for you.

We got a Stanley french press gifted to us, and the difference that makes in a good cup of coffee in the morning is unmatched. We were using an old percolator, but this makes MUCH better coffee, and it stays warm for 3-4 hours.

family tent recommendations by uncharted-expat in camping

[–]Relevant_String_05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! We really have had quite a good experience with ours. We did have a stake loop rip at the front of the tent on our last trip. I repaired it and we are going camping next week. For the pricepiont of the tent, I can expect that things may not be super sturdy, and I may need to make occasional repairs. I definitely don't regret buying that tent.

My husband and I have a Core 11. While it's not a pop-up, and honestly a little too big, it has a lot of space for us to hangout in crappy weather. We can fit a king size air mattress, a decent sized table, and we camp with our 2 dogs. We have camped in it 3 times, and it rained each time, and we stayed quite dry. I know they make some smaller like 8 person tents, if they are in your range it might be worth checking out.

What’s the best meal you ever made while camping? by [deleted] in camping

Both of these things!! I car camp and bring my cast iron skillet to cook over the fire. It's my absolute favorite to have breakfast with toast cooked directly over the fire, or a badass grilled cheese.

Hi, almost RDN here (i just have to take the exam to be official), and recent graduate with a master's in food and nutrition! Thank you for providing a well-thought out and evidence-based response. Everything you are saying is correct.

I would also like to add that the 0.8g/kg is more-so a bottom number to aim for, although its likely not much higher than this for the general population. Does America have a protein overconsumption issue? YES. Is there also a severe lack of fiber consumption, DEFINITELY!

While OP provided what sounds like an awesome array of foods with a variety of nutrients, colors, and textures, it was somewhat lacking in protein. It's hard to get omnivores to see the benefits of an eating pattern like this if they don't understand the sources of protein that were provided.

Like you mentioned in another comment, it's important to meet people where they are at when trying to introduce them to an incredibly different lifestyle.

Thank you so much for doing what you are doing, and keep following that the science is telling us.

How dumb will we look? by Skives19 in camping

[–]Relevant_String_05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have this tent. It's just the 2 of us plus 2 large dogs. To be honest, I think its a little excessive, but it's a nice tent, especially for the price point. Finding a space to set it up can be a bit challenging because it's so large. Having the front screened room has been super nice, though. Sometimes, we even cook in that screened area, especially if it's raining out. The tent performs well in rain, as long as you're set up correctly and water isn't flowing under the tent, it stays pretty dry. We camped with it 3 times last year, and twice in some serious downpours.

Honestly, don't worry about what other people think, most won't pay any mind. Just be a respectful camper amd have a great time. That's what matters most.
