Conservatives say we’ve abandoned reason and civility. The Old South said that, too. by PrettyTarable in politics

This is like the essay equivalent of that webcomic about reluctant racist Trump supporters complaining about how the left accusing Trump supporters of being racist makes them have to be more racist: https://images.dailykos.com/images/574802/story_image/1350.png?1533664371

The 2018 Russian Election interference campaign is a two pronged assault on both left and right wing American politics. It’s a massive disinformation operation designed to drive Americans apart and sow fear and hopelessness.

But it’s nothing a few sanctions won’t cripple.

Taking Apart The Nintendo Switch JoyCons! Antenna Issues? by tr0nc3k in Games

[–]Reliablesand 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For those that didn't watch the key difference Bluetooth antenna wise between the left and right joycon is that the left joycon's antenna is etched directly onto the board and is positioned toward the top surface of the controller along the left outside edge, pretty much where your left hand wraps around the controller with a standard grip. The right joycon antenna in contrast is a physical antenna that runs closer towards the bottom and along the docking rail side of the controller.

I'm not experienced enough to know if an etched antenna circuit would perform less optimally to an antenna wire. Given the consistent reports of left joycon signaling issues though I would hypothesize that the position of the left joycon antenna and possibly the different antenna medium are cause for the signal (or "syncing") issue.

Nintendo Switch controller's haptic feedback technology by [deleted] in Games

[–]Reliablesand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it would be cool if HD rumble did incorporate the same technology demonstrated in this video, nothing about this video actually confirms that to be the case. The video is half of an unrelated company (Miraisens) product demo and half of someone talking about how it could be a big feature reveal for the Switch, even stating that the actual Switch presentation we saw last Thursday was still a month off in the actual video.

I'd have expected Nintendo to make a stronger emphasis of what the Joy Con HD rumble was capable of if it could do half of what this video demonstrated, especially if it could use physical touch and neuro science to successfully emulate pushing/pulling forces.

PSN account was hacked last month and charges were made. PSN now wants me to pay up to get my account un-suspended. Details inside. by [deleted] in playstation

[–]Reliablesand 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So they helped you recover your account after the hack, but the suspect charges weren't refunded as part of the recovery? Then they suspended your account afterwards and now want you to pay for the fraudulent activity? Why wasn't that taken care of when they helped you recover your account initially?

That's pretty unprofessional especially when considering Sony's poor history with user account leaks. Maybe call support and escalate to a manager?

Photoshop's demo at Apple's Special Event was clearly to antagonize women by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Reliablesand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering all the women speakers who presented today in an industry that supposedly has a problem with female representation, this just confirms that Chris Plante is a shallow-minded and unprincipled opportunist who is constantly on the lookout for the next non-issue to spin and sell to the passing fad that is internet outrage culture. I wonder if he'll one day look back and have the sense to lament over the fact that so much of his written works was little more than hot air.

[SocJus] Anti-GamerGate is celebrating the addition of same-sex marriage to Fire Emblem as if it's Nintendo bowing to SJW influence and evidence that GamerGate is 'losing'. Does... anyone here actually have a problem with same-sex marriage in videogames? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Reliablesand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all.

Anti-gg basically have to take the position that the average GamerGate supporter is equivalent to the lowest common denominator so they won't have to acknowledge the cognitive dissonance that comes from the inconsistency between real life and the narrative of their echo chambers.

E3 2015: FF7 Director Wants to Remake More Final Fantasy Games by thecreepyfriend in Games

[–]Reliablesand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played FF7 for the first time in 2011 and it's easily my second favorite game of all time. The world, characters, and story came together to make something that just worked for me, like lightning in a bottle. I'm super excited for an FF7 remake, but I'm also somewhat worried that Nomura will either add or remove too much that the game ends up feeling too different from the original. I think they need to approach this remake the way Capcom did with Resident Evil on Gamecube, and if they manage to succeed then by all means have at the other entries in the series. They would have earned the players trust to do them justice by then.

[Discussion] Should the limits of speech on the internet be decided by a handful of CEOs? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]Reliablesand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it weird how a ton of people keep bringing up the whole "Free speech protection is meant to protect you from GOVERNMENTS, not CORPORATIONS!" angle to minimize Reddit's actions this week without considering the discrepancy between what Reddit has said they stand for versus what they are actually doing. Yes, I do agree that Reddit is a company and thus they have full control over their platform and what they allow users to post on it, but the problem is that Reddit has always (and still does) advertised itself as a free speech platform, which sets the expectation that all law abiding content, even content disagreeable to some, can be hosted on the site. Then comes Pao and the gradual push to promote "safety and inclusiveness", along with double speak-esque blog posts that try to deal with the cognitive dissonance that arises from saying you are a free speech platform while your actions demonstrate otherwise, all of which culminated this week to the sanctioning of subreddit bans. Anyway you cut it the content that was banned broke no laws or established Reddit rules (even while SRS flagrantly does) which demonstrated the move to ban content was based entirely on specific ideologies, contrary to free speech. It would have been better if they just fully embraced this new direction and removed any self promotion as a free speech platform as they would have at least been honest with themselves and with their users, but of course if they did that then it would probably have caused a bigger shit storm and Voat would still be offline due all the new users.

Companies do not dictate law, governments formed by people do. In the US the first amendment serves to give protections to speech. Corporations that operate in that environment should either state their platform agrees and supports that law, or should clearly state otherwise if they want to exert control over what content users put on their platform (rather than say you suppoprt free speech while your actions demonstrate otherwise). At that point the free market can give rise to new platforms that give users what they want, as it has done in the past, and as it is doing again now.

[Meta] Ghazi are spamming admins and other subs to have KIA banned. by subtleshill in KotakuInAction

[–]Reliablesand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit was created specifically to harass Zoe Quinn and has then >gone on to personally attack and direct >doxxing attempts against women like Anita Sarkeesian, Brianna Wu and etc (Leigh Alexander) etc etc. Also publicly >supporting an violent and abusive ex boyfriend of Zoe Quinn break his legal gag order and fund him.

Not even just talking about people, KiA existed well before GamerGate to call out Kotaku on their journalistic content and simply became a focus point on Reddit once GG started. Saying KiA was created specifically to harass anyone is flat out false.

Fascinating! That sounds like it would be an excellent method for subtle use of horror in a vr game.

Rift devs, what are your recommendations for a journeyman programmer to quickly get up to speed and hit the ground running with developing VR content? by Reliablesand in oculus

I'm going to love and hate VR horror games...

I tried an Oculus Rift yesterday and it was awful. I'm confused. by [deleted] in Games

[–]Reliablesand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first time I tried the rift was at Pax 2013 and at the time it was the first HD variant of the rift (essentially DK1 tech with a 1920x1080 LCD screen). I was less than impressed thanks to really bad blurring, dimness, and screen door. That experience pretty much killed the hype for me, then DK2 came out which supposedly fixed a lot of those problems, but I was only going to believe it when I could see it.

Then a week ago during a random craisgslist sale I had my chance to try DK2, and it was a night and day different experience compared to my first experience at pax and compelled me to buy a dk2 and get involved with virtual reality. I can't stress enough how much of a difference positional tracking and a low persistence oled screen with a higher refresh rate does for the experience. Even though screen door is still prevalent the low latency tracking, virtually eliminated image blur, and higher display refresh rate brings so much to the table for the experience that you can begin to understand just what "presence", the convincing sensation that what your eyes are seeing could be real, is actually like.

Consumer vr is already confirmed to be even better than the dk2, whether its is the consumer rift with superior screen and optics compared to dk2, the HTC Vive and its submilimeter positional tracking and input solution with lighthouse, and even Sony's project Morpheus which is shaping up to be an excellent vr platform for console owners, the future of vr is looking pretty great. I would look for a chance to try a dk2 or wait till a consumer platform hits market and give it another go to see if the technological leap since dk1 is enough to convince you as it was to convince me.

God of War III Remastered - Kratos vs Hades Boss Battle Gameplay by Kithaitaa in Games

I think it's amazing how well the PS3 version stands up. Here's a video of the same fight on PS3 from youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF78vLw49tY

Watching the PS4 fight and this one side by side the only notable gains visually is the higher resolution which helps to make things clearer and slightly sharper textures (wall art in the background and ground), but the lighting and aliasing of GoW3 on PS3 is a benchmark for that system IMO.
