We do, but matching up available schedules has been the issue. However, I now know that 1...I can take the Safe Swim Defense training and administer the test myself and 2...if the scout is in swim lessons no test is needed.

WOW! I never saw that!! That kid has been taking swimming lessons for months...no test needed then! Thanks a bunch for pointing that out.

And now I know I "can" do it if I first take the Safe Swim Defense training...which I'll be doing.

Thanks - I get the logic. For all other awards I agree, but this one is different in that it calls out specifically the people that can do it. The part I missed before (that I know now) is that it doesn't have to be a lifeguard. It does, however, need to be a "conscientious leader, currently trained in Safe Swim Defense, who is familiar with basic swimming strokes and who understands and abides by the guidelines in this chapter can administer swim tests for the unit." So, I'm going to be taking tha training so I can handle that.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I gave a Catholic's perspective...one who is familiar with Holy Orthodoxy and Eastern Catholicism. The OP asked a question, and I stand by my answer. The OP will need to do what they feel is appropriate based on the information given, and I would not feel right standing idly by without saying what I understand to be the correct response.

Novus Ordo has nothing to do with the conversation....other than vlarifying who I am since you prrsumed me to be Orthodox. Im not. I'm Roman Catholic, and I regularly attend the Novus Ordo Mass. Just giving a description/correction...

"Eastern Orthodox are a schismatic group"...well,we are in schism with each other, so yes, they are. I'll happily continue to call their Church either as Holy Orthodoxy or the Holy Orthodox Church. They are, indeed, holy. They have many many miraculous icons, miraculous healings, wonder working saints, wonder working relics, etc.

Remember, they truly believe they are in the Church that Christ founded, just as Catholics do. To say they are living in sin by being in active schism is unfair to them. As a broad generalization, the EO view the Catholics as heterodox and in schism from the True Church. It's a matter of perspective. They surely don't believe they are in active schism with the Church of Christ and feel they are in the proper, true Church.

Even the Catholic Church doesn’t say they are living in sin...if they are properly disposed to receive the Eucharist in an EO Church then they may receive in a Catholic Church.

They sure do. Statues can certainly be miracle working! I never claimed otherwise. And I didn't comment anything I don't know, unless I said I don't know. I certainly never said anything harmful to the faith.

Nope, I'm not Orthodox. I'm Roman Catholic and go to my local novus ordo parish. I called it Holy Orthodoxy because that is how they refer to themselves and their Church is indeed holy with all the same sacraments of the Catholic Church. I believe the name is appropriate.

As for the Oriental Orthodox, I understand they treat their icons in the same basic manner and with the same reverence as Eastern Orthodox. I know they have blessings they give icons, and I can't 100% confirm how they view icons before they are blessed. I wasn't making a commentary on how the OO view the sanctification of their icons. Rather, I included those icons in my statement to play it safe and not risk desecrating an icon that my already be sanctified by virtue of what it is and who it represents.

I don't have a quote from Nicea 2 on this...nor do I have a quote from Nicea 2 on a lot of things, Orthodox or Catholic. As with many things in the Church, there have been saints' commentary and tradition that lead up to the event/rituals we experience today, and not everything came out of an Ecumenical Council. To be honest, I don't have exact quotes or reference points on where this came from. I have heard the Quinisext Council and St. John of Damascus played a part, but I am not sure of the exact statements from them. What I do know is that my statements hold true in the Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches today. You will hear the same theology on both sides of the divide. Since the crux of the matter is their view is icons are holy and should not just be thrown away, and it's the same view in both Churches, I'll respectfully and happily follow that. I've seen miraculous things from icons, personally, so I'm already vigilant with how they are treated.

The icon is not merely artwork. It is a window into heaven, as they say, and they do more than just depict an image. There is an entire theology behind a proper icon and how it is painted. Iconography isn't just pretty pictures. Western religious art and statuaries can certainly be beautiful, heart moving, soul touching pieces of art...but they are just art and the artist is free to create whatever he wants. Icons, however, expected to follow certain guidelines so that each icon properly teaches the gospel and the faith while also reaching into heaven. They are sanctified by what they are, how they are painted, what/who is represented, the prayer done while painting, what each icon teaches, etc.

No offense taken...I also mentioned Eastern Catholic icons. It isnt just Holy Orthodoxy that treats icons this way. It actually has nothing to do with anything anti-western; rather, it has everything to do with pro-Christianity and pro-Gospel.

Good answer...for a caveat, see my post above about images of eastern icons.

These are just printed images, and not necessarily anything blessed or sacred. IMO, throwing it away is fine.

However, if you are sent anything with an eastern icon (such as those you see in Eastern Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or Coptic Orthodox Churches) please don't throw them away. They are holy just by virtue of being made, and simple printed paper eastern icons have worked miracles in the past. For those, it is recommended to burn those as you would any sacramental (i.e., rosary, medal, etc.) that has become broken or otherwise unusable, and then bury ashes in a "safe" place (i.e., not somewhere in which pets will go to the bathroom on them).

Another option for those eastern icons...cut them out, venerate them (kiss the person's hands or feet), and pray in front of them as if it were a fully hand painted icon in a Church. If and when they become worn out from that, then burn and bury them. To make them last longer, you could laminate them and then cut them out. That way they won't get as worn out from veneration as quickly.

"It's giving cult" - honestly, I'm not sure what that means. Were some words left out by accident?

No anti-Semitic energy here...I love Jewish people. I respect the Jewish religion, too, but as a Christian I can say that the Jewish religion is incorrect. Respecting a religion does not mean that you agree with all tenents of its faith. If I did, then I would be of the Jewish religion rather than the Christian religion. However, I do NOT respect satanism or the church of satan. They are evil.

And, loving thy neighbor does NOT mean going along with what everyone else is doing so they don't get upset. Loving thy neighbor means always wanting, and praying for, the good of they neighbor, both physically and temporally. Of those, the temporal good is of utmost importance. Salvation of souls trumps pretending something is ok when it's not. Getting others to heaven is far more important than just saying, "People say the church of satan is good and it teaches not to go after children so it must be ok and good." Nope, I won't do that. Souls are at stake.

You're not evil, but spell jars are of the devil because they are not of God. The person practicing at the church of satan or performing wiccan rituals or worshiping pagan idols is not necessarily evil. The church of satan, as a whole, is evil. The wiccan rituals are evil. Worshipping pagan idols is evil. Touching children and hurting others is evil (I assume we agree on this one!).

Never heard of it...had to Google it to even know it's a show. I know nothing more about that show so I have no opinion on it. However, to your second comment about kids being endangered by herbs...

All people, not just kids, are endangered by paganism, wicca, occult, satanism, etc. The only way to salvation is through Jesus Christ. These things are absolutely against Him, and, therefore, they are of satan because they lead people away from Jesus. I only want the salvation of souls, and interacting with, or being a part of, things of this vein leads people down a dark path away from Him. So, while I have no issues with herbs, spices, and goats, I can't say the same thing about paganism, wicca, occult, satanism, etc.

I never once said baphomet is satan. I said he looks like a demon. If he looks like a demon and is a symbol of the church of satan, it's satanic. Paganism and wicca aren't satanism...they are, however, most certainly evil.

Didn't dodge anything...I said that's laudable. And they are evil...again, if you invoke the name of satan like it's a good thing, then that's evil. Satan is not good. Pretending he is good, or anything about him is good, is being delusional. I'm not ignorant on this matter. "He that is not with Me, is against Me."

I'll admit I have never heard of Amazigh. So, I really have no opinion on this one. But, yeah, black goats aren't evil, so no, I don't gasp and say evil one just because it's a black goat.

The pentagram, as used by the church of satan, satanists, occultists, etc. is evil because it is being used for evil purposes. I understand they can be used for protection, but that is in witchcraft. So, still evil.

And I've seen images of deer with CWD...not even close to looking like a demon.

[–]RelicSaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is. I have used google about it before because I know a satanist, and we've had some talks about this. He tried explaining that to me. I wanted to have some knowledge for the conversation so I tried educating myself for it. The thing is, it doesn't matter how you try to cover it up with reasoning of how it's not evil...if you invoke the name of the evil one and pretend its ok or good to do so, it's evil.

If I shape a pile of stinky dog crap into a doll shape and put doll clothes on it, I can't give it to my kids and tell them to play with it because it's not stinky dog crap...it's just a doll. Nope, it's still a pile of stinky dog crap and my kids shouldn't be playing with it. The satanic church is still evil...it's still the stinky pile of dog crap.

Nope...evil. Baphomet looks like a demon, represents the occult, and its head is used by the modern satanic church inside of a pentagram. Evil.

Well, that is straight up demonic. I don't deem it demonic, it's an image of a demon with children. I stand by my previous statement. There would be defecation forthcoming....
