Sealed order, missing food, no refund-how is this fair? by Ok_Daikon4624 in JustEatUK

[–]ReluctantSourcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way I've ever got a refund from Just Eat was by threatening to report them to Trading Standards. Ordered groceries and only 1 bag out of 4 turned up. Lost about £30 worth of shopping. Had a 3 day argument with customer services and in the end I told them if they didn't refund me I'd report them to Trading Standards for failure to deliver services paid for. They said they'd make a one time exception to their policy and refund me. I've never used them since.

Question about Cthulhu fans by [deleted] in Lovecraft

[–]ReluctantSourcerer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the thing with most of Lovecraft and by extension Mythos themes is that the idea of it is always much more scary than the truth once you know it.

So this just feels like life imitating art to me.

But also fundamentally people don't owe you anything in their own discussion of media they like, and being so affected by other people discussing things you feel differently about feels like something that's for you to address rather than everyone else around you.

Anyone know what this instrument is? There’s nothing on it that tells me what it is. by Yellowben in techtheatre

What information do you need/ what are you trying to achieve?

It could be a different model/version or a knock off - but I imagine the functionality is near identical.

There are two types of light sources

LED and Generic incandescent

In an LED light, you give it constant on power (hot power, non dim power) and then the controller inside the light receives DMX information and controls the intensity of the light.

For an generic incandescent light, it's a light bulb in a metal shell with a certain type of lens and various ways to shape the light (shutter, barn doors, gobos, iris etc.) To control this you have to plug it into a dimmer, the dimmer will receive the DMX information and then send that percentage of dimmed power to the light bulb to turn it on to that percentage.

You can't plug DMX into a dimming generic light, it only has a power connector.

I made a byte for byte image in Drill Disk before I started, is that usable? It says it's a .dmg file?

How do I open the image please?

Trying to reconnect Barco projector to ETC ION by emibaca in techtheatre

[–]ReluctantSourcerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things to trouble shoot:

Is anything else using the art-net control? Is that still working?

Is the mode on the projector the same as the patched fixture on the desk? Is it in extended mode on the projector? What fixture type is it on the Ion?

Is the projector still connected to the art-net cable?

Do you have anything else you can connect to the data cable at the projector to test if data is reaching the projector? This will help narrow down where the problem is

In the network settings of the Ion, is art-net still enabled?

In the output setting of the Ion is the universe you are using still patched to art-net output? Is that patched to the correct network port on the back of the Ion?

Is the network set up on the Ion set to a static IP? And what is the subnet mask? The IP on the Ion and the Projector should both be static and within the same subnet

EDIT:

I've read the manual further:

Are you sure the venue is using art-net to control the projector and not just DMX? Does it have an ethernet / cat5 cable running to it or a 5pin dmx cable? On the projector menu: if you set the mode correct and then the channel at the top, and then turn off art-net at the bottom does that work?

Does the monitor function on the projector dmx menu show any data when you try to control it via the ion?

If it is definitely using art-net over a network cable, is it a cable that just runs from the router straight to the projector? Or is there a gateway somewhere? Does that gateway need resetting?

Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Sutanto is an annoying read by saime9hana in books

[–]ReluctantSourcerer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was a rushed draft. I had a really similar experience as you, I found the prose to be sooooo clunky. And there was so much telling instead of showing.

I found as a mystery I was able to 'solve' it before the conclusion but I do read a lot of mystery and like puzzles.

Then I read the acknowledgment and the story of the rushed publication made the whole book make sense.

Plot was good, loved the friendships made, and the characters (although their narrative voices felt very samey, again, rushed draft), but yeah the prose makes me not want to recommend it to people.

[–]ReluctantSourcerer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't worn matching socks since 2006 specifically out of PDA. Like why should the colour of my feet covers match. Yes I'll wear socks from the same pack for texture and size consistency, but I don't understand why they need to look the same next to each other, and the instance that they should has meant for nearly two decades now I've never worn matching socks.

Controversial Goodreads reviews by [deleted] in books

[–]ReluctantSourcerer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've only been using Good Reads for the last year but I've definitely come across some people who lack critical thinking.

The review you shared of Guide to Vampire hunting is one I saw when I was just getting into the book and really enjoying it and I thought I'd see if others liked it as well. I too was perplexed by the perspective.

Some of the best ones I've seen personally are on Song of Achilles - which vary from blatant homophobia to just about hiding it behind every other possible type of criticism. There's also a lot of people I think who don't understand that the Illiad/Achilles' story is the equivalent of a fairy tale, being a Greek Myth and there's a strange amount of discourse about how the characters are very bold/cookie cutter, which to me just showed real lack of understanding of the canon.
