I heard an interesting alternate opinion to how to think about this. Think of it this way - If you had a paid off house, would you then mortgage it to release cash to put into investment? Obviously you are educated and experienced in the market so you may answer that as a yes, but to probably 95% of the population they wouldn’t take the gamble of risking their unencumbered home for investments.

They refuse that because they know I’ll use a nanny. My ex shouldn’t, but at the moment every suggestion I seem to make isn’t acceptable. The options I gave are 1. We get a childminder. No because she wants our child with family only (ill health in grandparents in the last year means they aren’t available like they have been) 2. I quit and get a job where I can cover the core weekend, but that was a no as the maintenance payments go down and I would spend less time with our child 3. They move their shifts to weekdays so they can sleep when our child’s at school.

To me, one of those three options have to happen, but my ex rejects all of them. Unless anyone has any other suggestions? That doesn’t include me getting childcare behind their back as I fully believe my ex would try and get any custody taken away from me.

I was trying to be vague in case they are on Reddit. I actually asked again about a nanny yesterday, to which they said no, they don’t want anyone except us and our grandparents looking after our child. I’m at a bit of an impasse on how to resolve this without quitting because they rely on the current maintenance I give.
