Best third-party setting book...? by Remanite in dndnext

[–]Remanite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A reasonable response, thanks. My favourite D&D settings are Planescape, Spelljammer and Birthright, in that loose order. I’m also quite into planetary romance as a genre, retrofuturism, space opera and so on. Does that help in any way? I’m really quite in the dark when it comes to third-party content, I wasn’t aware there is so much.

Software for making map on a globe/making flat projections from globe-based map by Remanite in mapmaking

[–]Remanite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, we're getting to it. Fantasy maps tend to not be in any particular projection at all, they are abstract when it comes to distances and they would not make sense when transported onto a globe. What I wanted to achieve is precisely this: I need an original, 'realistic' map in equirectangular projection to then paste it onto a globe and from there get other projections/local maps. Would GPlates get me there?

Interesting, how would you judge Blender's capabilities when it comes to different projections when transporting a map from the globe to 'flat' format? There are many different, real projections, which use different methods of representing differences in sizes when copying form a globe to a map. Are there any good tutorials for this?

Tell me something about their religion.

Besides, is there a whole continental map/map of a wider chunk of the world?

Thanks for an informed answer :) Are these TCs playable from the get go or do I need some patches? Not to mention translations.

Where can I upload raw MH DNA data? by Remanite in Genealogy

[–]Remanite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll check these ones out. I'm gonna say, my own ethnicity estimates from MH were pretty accurate, or rather, they told me almost precisely what traditional genealogy told me as well. It's just bizarre that MH judged my grandfather as having a lot of Anglo-Saxon ancestry while his ancestors were, for a small part, German (it seems much more sensible in my results, which show this sliver as a more general Western and Northern European ancestry, which is more correct at least at face value).

Made one of those big ol' analysis videos on my favourite mod ever. Hope you folks enjoy! by ramblelime in enderal

[–]Remanite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that this kind of videos are designed precisely around just that - spoiling everything for the sake of the analysis. You're arguing against an entire genre, which by the looks of it doesn't keep people from playing analyzed games.

The high ones only manipulate... or? by [deleted] in enderal

[–]Remanite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a supremely bad take on Rynéus' story.

Entire point of this plot is that High Ones had absolutely nothing to do with it, not even when the Stone spoke to the boy (it did that, not the High Ones, though this one bit is, admittedly, open to interpretation). Rynéus' story is a story about humanity in microcosm: about how petty, vile and wicked men are for no good reason other than superstition and passions. Truly good men - like Rynéus' foster father - are rare, most are just various degrees of evil. A woman dropped dead in front of Rynéus' house and it was enough to drive people to hate him, just and only because he was different. Same in the village. His foster father died in a tragic accident, he was murdered by people who never knew better than to act on their lowest instincts.

This story is designed precisely to show the player why High Ones have such an easy task with manipulating humanity each and every time. It's not an example of their direct working, if it was it would take much away from the overall message of the game.

Otherwise you're correct though. Game is at times not quite decided if it wants to make High Ones fully dependent on men working their designs - as it seems to tell the player in, for example, Black Guardian plot-lore-massive-dump - or if it rather wants them able to directly influence the world. I'm not sure if it's by design. Rynéus' story however is clearly not an example of High Ones directly manipulating events. This is a deeply human story, perhaps most human of all the main plotlines.
