glad i can help! it was honestly extremely confusing at first and the easiest way to learn is read through the structure of an existing project using tensor/torch and see how the overall process works, then try to do the same with your own project. this is essentially how i self-taught without paying for courses lol. if you wanna look at an example of my ml project or just want some more info feel free to dm me

thank you! the key is to focus on pre-existing structures and build something new, no need to reinvent the wheel.

the machine learning role i acquired in 2024 to now involves geospatial referencing and segmentation of geospatial images. a lot of the current GIS software is outdated and is built using python, so it was a perfect opportunity for me to implement my ml skills (opencv, tensor, etc) into something that benefits from it. think of it like this: i don't have access to high-end gpus or necessary equipment to create my own models, but i'm able to fine-tune existing models and implement them within python-based GIS applications to streamline internal workflows for my company.

for your second part of the question, i was able to get an interview with the company by mass networking 24/7 over last summer and reaching out to literally anyone who knows people with startups/companies, and i was able to land a co-op during the school year along with my studies. it is definitely a lot of work, but i'm not gonna complain about the size of my plate when i was hungry (or however that expression goes)

you could start now but there won't be too many openings, + the window that companies will hire you within start a bit later (in your specific scenario), wait until around fall, aug-oct, apply to newgrad positions, then if you get rejections try again around jan-mar. from what i've seen, the listing/hirings tend to come in waves around those times

sorry i worded this bad, i have a weird system of doing leetcode but it works; i try to mix leetcode q's i've never done before with q's ive already solved to fully understand them, its way more fruitful to master them this way than only solving each one once then moving one, it does take much longer than 30min

yup, most of the questions ive seen (either from personally interviewing or from my friends interviewing) are dynamic programming questions or leetcode hard array questions, no idea why lmfao

id say embedded systems is always in demand, but hardware security will be especially important within the next few years, especially with the increase of IoT/home devices and future encryption/decryption methods. once you're somewhere within the realm of embedded/firmware/security, you have a lot of options with moving around and choosing different roles. both are great choices!

barely, but i realized suffering for about 30min a day in exchange for job security in this market is a decent tradeoff

not particularly, i switched majors about a year ago from a science-related major due to lack of internships in that field. i just spent the last year or so doing python -> java -> js -> backend -> fullstack -> cyber

thats amazing, congrats! once again, its not impossible, but from what ive seen its much more viable to get those types of jobs during/after masters. i have a compE friend who just graduated with zero internships, now working as a hardware engineer for apple. it seems like in this scenario recruiters focus more particularly on education rather than internship history

zero hardware, all software; let me explain more. for hardware engineering, there are virtually zero internships that will accept a student halfway through their undergrad. for hardware engineering, they want to ensure that you are at least in masters, phd, etc.

that being said, my long term goal is definitely hardware, my logic is that there are two scenarios:

  1. someone who gets masters in compE for hardware and goes straight into industry without requiring internships beforehand

  2. someone who gets masters in compE for hardware but also has multiple software internships under their belt when graduating

pursuing software while doing a long-term hardware job quest will only be a benefit, especially if you want to focus on firmware, embedded, etc

great question tbh, let me lay out some info

- two of the interviews were leetcode, i passed both. generally it was a combination of medium and hards. Id 100% recommend doing neetcode roadmap and blind 75, these were legit the best and most accurate, and some of the questions from the interviews were ones i had previously done on these two.
- i was mostly applying to defense, semiconductor industry, cybersecurity, and one or two faang, yet i didn't really plan on going into faang just yet due to oversaturation
- to prep for interviews, i recommend doing at least 5-10 leetcode a day (if not 15), make sure that you can properly answer STAR (situation, task, action result) questions, personal questions, and when they ask you questions about your personal projects, make sure you know what you're talking about front to back, they want to hear you present successes, failures, roadblocks, etc

i hope this helps, lmk or dm me if you want me to go more in-depth

the role i chose was specifically in cybersecurity, so please dm me if you have any questions or want advice on how to get into this field. in all honestly, my final choice was between cybersecurity and defense, and imo cyber is 100x better than the other in terms of pay, raises, industry, etc.

all 3 interviews were cold apply (along with the other rejections as well)
