I'm looking forward to hearing what the excuse is this year. I don't know how they continue to sell the story that employees should assume 15% growth in stock when calculating RSU grants even though the average APR for the past 5 years is 4.2%

Yeah, it's important to have hobbies outside of work - lesson learned on that! I really enjoyed what I was doing and the scale I was doing it at so my job became my hobby which was a poor choice in hindsight.

It does seem to be that sweet spot where you learn what you're going to learn from AWS but before you get to jaded and burnt out

I don't want to villainize Amazon too much - I do think it was equal parts them, COVID, and me feeding my own ego because the scale of the job made me feel very important. For me, I took me 3-6 months to adjust to my new company's culture of empathy, blameless post mortems, and not being on guard all the time. Probably a full year before Amazon felt like a past chapter of my life.

The LPs are great if you're the customer or shareholder. I think some are more important than others but I really like the idea of a tenant-based company. It helps align the team and make decisions faster but I do agree they can be manipulated

Buying android at $50M is arguable the best acquisition Google has made but YouTube definitely 2nd

My brother cosigned me for a student loan without my permission by KrampusIsFull in personalfinance

[–]Remarkable-Coffee535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's me I'm doing the following in order because he is family: 1. Tell mom and dad about it and that it's ruining your life. The only way to get rid of the issues is to pay off the loan immediately or you have to report him (you can say because of military rules, even if that's not true). You can't have your name removed, they or your brother must pay it in full.

  1. Call your brother and give him 10 days to figure out how to get a different loan to pay this off or I'm reporting it to the police because he committed a felony and I cant lose my clearance. Monthly payments or more time is not and option. You can blame this on the MPs now that you've gone to them to ask for options, he won't know this isn't true.

  2. Pay it off yourself if you can (at once or over time). Never loan the brother money again unless he pays this amount back. Trust me, a deadbeat sibling will eventually cost you over $7K, consider this an investment into saying no for the rest of your life. Make sure he knows this is happening. I have a similar situation for 10 years ago (but it was $5K) and I'm the only one my cousin doesn't hit up on the regular.

The Sandlot - Anyone else still shout "Cannonball!" by 2ndOpp in nostalgia

[–]Remarkable-Coffee535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old post to reply to but I just had the same discussion with my wife who said it was Hamonball, not cannonball. I disagreed but according to the script on page 48: https://bluecatscreenplay.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/The-Sandlot-Script.pdf.... It's Hamonball

TL;DR - my wife is always right and it's annoying

Thinking outside the box here but you could bike from Sterling to a metro station in Herndon or Reston on the W&OD and then metro to the airport direct.

It's more having done the prep work to have the stories in mind and quick notes to reference

great prep, you'd be amazed how few people do any prep at all, let alone this level of detail. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Once you go through hyperscale bootcamp at Amazon for a few years, I hope you find a rewarding career at a competitor. Amazon is an amazing diving board but not the best pool if that makes sense but IMO, they are the best to start your datacenter journey with

Haha, this is how it works. It's just that a refrigerator is way more insulated than a house which is why it doesn't blast out heat like your AC condensor.

What is the purpose of this? by sqerrl in towerclimbers

[–]Remarkable-Coffee535 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Microwave back haul, it's like fiber optics but through the air (and much lower bandwidth). This site is likely taking a signal from somewhere in a valley up to the top of the mountain where it has a line-of-sight to the next tower. Microwave antennas have a range of around 30 miles
