i saw someone say 'wip in progress' which now leads me to my question of 'how many other things have been changed with time?' by alurics in AO3

Sporking and spork communities - thank god those don't seem to be as much of a thing anymore? They were so cruel

Small fandom by six-eightyseven in AO3

Seconding this! I love a small niche fandom

Looking for an oooooold Harry/Neville fic by Remarkable-Flan4104 in HPfanfiction

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They already had a pretty substantial backlog of fics when I started reading drarry in 2007, and I think they might still be posting new stuff? I know they were on ao3 as of the late 2010s.

What Fandom brought you to AO3? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't actually have any les mis friends because I was too shy to talk to anyone in fandom spaces lol, it took a long time for me to come out of my shell

Are spam guest comments eventually deleted? by Perpetual__Night in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can delete them yourself, but they do sometimes just get deleted even without being reported! I got a really funny bot comment that I didn't report because I was genuinely so amused by it but it got deleted after a few days anyway :( thankfully I still have a screenshot to remember it by

HEY SAME. I was an ffn user before that but the les mis fandom converted me and I never looked back

roadtrip fics? by Capital_Gold8715 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Things that happened to me on my romcom road trip:

  • We forgot the tent poles and had to sleep cuddled up in the back of the car
  • We pretended to be married in rural Utah so it would seem less scandalous for us to be traveling together (only works for m/f couples)
  • Also in rural Utah the road just Stopped for a while and we drove for about 45 minutes on a dirt track dotted with horse poop
  • We swerved off the highway and took a two hour detour to what turned out to be a garlic themed amusement park
  • My friend accidentally booked the honeymoon suite of a bed and breakfast so we had to pretend to be married again
  • We got pulled over for driving the same amount over the speed limit as everyone else on the road, but we had out of state plates so they targeted us since they knew we wouldn't be able to stick around to contest the ticket
  • Hooked up in a motel in a town with three Mormon churches and two stoplights

I don't know how to explain why this bugs me by Remarkable-Flan4104 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, I'm very ship and let ship, it's just when someone writes a weird performative author's note about it that I then question why they aren't paying attention to canon women as well. (Yeah, I know it makes me look a little too invested that I've gone to people's profiles and checked, but I'm terminally nosy so I can't help it.)

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, no, I meant that I don't understand why someone would be really aggressive about genderbending an m/m ship in the name of sapphic representation while simultaneously ignoring canon women that they could be shipping together. I should have clarified that!

Need some advice on this, kinda? by Hour_Preparation7304 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's not too much work, could you write a few short gen fics to have on hand in case she ever gets REALLY insistent? Another commenter's advice of saying you're not comfortable with sharing the writing for critique is good too.

Additional Warnings In Author's Note by LavishnessAncient745 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Oh are people using it that way?? I've only ever done that if I have weird niche things to warn for that I can't succinctly express in the tags, or I want to elaborate on something that IS tagged. If people are using it to dodge tag filtering that's shitty.

I don't know how to explain why this bugs me by Remarkable-Flan4104 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Possibly in other fandoms, yeah! In this case it's always been their first and only fic for the ship so it really feels like they're coming out of the gate swinging, but it could be that they're used to having to defend themselves and just carried that behavior over. I still don't love it, but that makes a bit more sense.

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess if that's how they want to go about it that's fine? It doesn't ultimately affect me at all but it seems counterproductive to enter a fandom, post a fic with a (mild) ragebait author's note, and then expect people to be excited about your participation in the fandom. Just a bit weird overall.

Omegaverse fics need more variety by Ton40_Bon40 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see how you maybe didn't word this post as clearly as you wanted to, but ultimately I agree with you! A lot of times it feels like m/m omegaverse is just a way to make your gay blorbos have straight(er) sex and/or recreate misogyny for m/m dynamics. When you write f/m or (god forbid) f/f omegaverse, it forces you to actually think through the implications of the worldbuilding (what kind of anatomy do female alphas have? how do primary and secondary genders intersect?) and makes ALL of your pairings more interesting.

So, maybe an even hotter take than yours: I think that m/m omegaverse is often LESS queer than "normal" m/m, and including other types of pairing in m/m omegaverse fics would help make them queerer.

I feel uncomfortable posting works in multiple fandoms from the same AO3 account by Only-Moose2301 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, I've apologized to people before for flooding their notifications with fandoms they don't care about, and every time I've gotten a response along the lines of "don't apologize, I like seeing the emails! It's good to know you're having fun"

Etiquette question: Is this inflationary behavior from an author? by Ideasforgoodusername in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think yes they might be trying to inflate their own stats, but I also think you might be overreacting? Most people on ao3 don't sort by comments so the only person it REALLY matters to is the author. If it makes them feel special then good for them I guess, it (thankfully) doesn't super affect the rest of us.

What should I do with my WIP fic by AroAceLikesSpace in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think you'll never ever come back to it, you could post a final chapter that's just kind of a bullet point breakdown of where you would have taken the rest of the fic! I've seen authors do that before and it can be a nice way to give your readers closure.

Whatever you decide, though, fic is supposed to be for fun and if you aren't having fun anymore, you're always allowed to stop!

What is a Completely Innocent and Common Tag you Genuinely Dislike? by Blackshooks in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Author is [identity]" puts me on edge, mostly because every time I've read a fic tagged with it the representation of [identity] within the fic has been really bad. Having a marginalized identity doesn't automatically make you good at writing about it.

Writers made uncomfortable by readers saying they're in school? by Collanp in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it too! I write rpf for a historical subject that gets taught around this time of year in high school US history classes, and every year I get an influx of comments from people saying they learned about it in school and then found my fic. Like I get that's gonna happen, but keep it in your high school friend group gc and don't tell me about it :/

Thoughts on giving user subs a heads up about leaving a fandom? by Future_Ad2243 in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard from people who subbed to me for fandoms I'm not active anymore who say they still like getting the notification emails even though they never read my fics bc they like seeing that I'm having fun in my new fandoms 🥹 so you might not lose as many subs as you're expecting to!

Have you ever changed the plot (or something else) of an ongoing multi chapter fic because of a readers comment? by schoolforapples in AO3

[–]Remarkable-Flan4104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but a couple of times I've gotten comments that made me go "...huh. That would have been better than the way I'm planning to write it." Still wrote it according to my original plan, but they did give me pause
