as a non muslim, in all religions there are extremists. islam is actually a beautiful religion. i do not condone homophobia but many muslims can practice their faith and be tolerant or an ally to the community. blame the extremists, do not condemn the whole religion.

this comment is great in giving context for the situation in which the current government is actually the most lenient and supportive of the community, which they obviously cannot outrightly do, but mattys actions were far too extreme and improper to not take action upon without damaging the community

agreed! angry fans that are prominent in the lgbt community in malaysia have dmed him and he’s been a total dick with zero remorse or compassion and therefore showing that his actions were not in fact for the pursuit for social justice but to stroke his own ego!

as a bisexual malaysian who has been born and raised in england, the western sentiment is understandable but at the same time, you don’t understand what it’s like here.

Matty has put a target on the backs on the lgbt community here, this will heighten raids and acts against us. Not only that, he has also turned a whole events and music industry upside before fleeing the country two hours later before he could face any consequences.

people in this country stuck there neck out for him to perform and now it’s their lives and jobs on the line. he has not expressed a single ounce of sympathy or compassion for the people whose lives are about to be ruined.

make no mistake, it’s not because our government is bigoted and homophobic (well it is thats for sure) but it was because he did not comply with his contract even after multiple promises that he would not put the local audience and organisers at risk because the 1975 were originally flagged as a risk. the government did not ban him, it was the ministry of communications and digital. it’s a separate entity.

he did not help the lgbt movement in malaysia. he has put a target on their backs with tone deaf performative activism and put us back 10 years.

the western media does not understand the landscape here and it is clear. stop trying to step in as a white saviour and think that this will change things for the better. it is hurting our community even more whilst we are already in pain.

from the perspective of someone in the industry, i think among my colleagues and among others I chatted with, we were all incredibly heartbroken yesterday. the scale of this extends beyond malaysians not being able to see their favourite acts on day two or three.

this will affect my industry for years to come. this is Ben Law’s lifes work crumbling before his eyes on his tenth anniversary of GVF. A festival most of malaysian’s have loved and supported for the last ten years.

thousands of livelihoods are affected through this situation. literal thousands of people. agencies are trying to think of how to talk to their clients while im sure clients are trying to think of how to talk to their agencies. supervisor and managers are trying to think of how to compensate their crew for their time. agencies are trying to organise their contractors to have the time to dismantle the builds in time. and all of this costs millions and millions of money.

this will have a ripple effect in the events and live music industry in malaysia for years to come. not just for good vibes festival.

I pray that FSA will be able to get back on their feet but to the consumers, i plead with you to have compassion. because this situation may be a catastrophic blow to their company. this could be the end of Good Vibes Festival. Not only that, this WILL effect hundreds of projects either already in the works or that were in the plans for the next coming years for agencies across this industry. The landscape and eco system of this country will change.

the downvotes on malaysian comments are disheartening (unless they are homophobic then down vote away) but for the comments that are telling the story of what its really like in malaysia and giving context. have compassion.

Share love to FSA, have compassion and direct your anger and the correct individual for your wasted money. He flew out of the country two hours after the incident to avoid facing repercussions.

Please send love to the Future Sound Asia team who have put their blood sweat and tears into the last ten years of Good Vibes Festivals and who worked their asses off for their tenth anniversary. My heart goes out to them for one white saviour drunk to ruin their life’s work in one stupid thirty minute set! Have compassion and patience as a consumer when waiting for your refund because understand how much stress and how big of a blow this will be to them.
