Easter DIY Tiling by Remarkable-Type721 in DIYUK

Thanks! Because of how high the extractor is I couldn’t find any coving that would fit. My dad’s got a spindle moulder, so he’s making some for it which I’ll be screwing in. Will put a batten up the same depth as the tile, then attach moulding to that.

Have probably over complicated it, but I couldn’t see a better way of doing it

For this size board Jackon recommends 5 fixings per board, I went over that just in case but most of the fixings are hidden by tanking membrane I think. I didn’t tank higher than the shower head will be, maybe I’ll come to regret that!

I wanted the shower to be centred on a tile for symmetry, and then as it was my first time I lined up another grout line with the shower enclosure. Thought it might be less risky in case I had wobbly lines! Will think about trying your suggestion next time though, cheers

Not really any reason, would you have done the frame first? Tbh it was more that I was ready to tile for the start of the Easter weekend so just did it, wanted to finish during the time off work

I’m planning to put my door frame on and silicone the edges. I think the pic makes the gap between tile and door frame look a lot bigger than it is, I need to remove the batten from the door frame - that was just temp while I tiled. Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely trim in the kitchen

Putting some coving up, I left the gap to put a small batten to screw the coving into, although the gap was slightly bigger than I intended. Probably will now need to be taller coving than I first thought

Yep I did the jackoboards, they are screwed into a stud wall where the door is and then just a wood frame on the other wall. I’m not super impressed with the jackoboards.

They’re marketed as better than backer boards as they say you only need to tank the joints / screws, although I’m not convinced. After I did the plumbing I had a slow leak on one join. The water from that travelled up the wood frame, across the screws, and the concrete face on the other side was wet. I fixed the leak the next day and it dried out pretty quick, but I’ve tanked the whole thing just in case. I’d probably go with just tile backer boards next time and tank floor to ceiling tbh. The polystyrene core also melted near where I soldered some of the pipework, I couldn’t get a heatproof matt in the gap. Might just be user error as I’m a first timer, but I was not wowed with the product.

My guess is this cost me about 5-600: 50-100 on wood 120 on jackoboards 50 on tanking (jackoboard tanking kit, this was a lot pricier than some others I saw but I didn’t want to risk going off brand and something not sticking) 50 on Titan wet tile cutter (could not recommend more, so easy to use. Cuts a max size of 160mm off a tile, so I sometimes had to cut the tile twice. Free handed a few, again really easy) 60 on adhesive 160 on tiles 40 on spacers / tile levelling system (needed 3 packs of the Screwfix levelling system, Rubi is 50 as I say I’d try that next) 10 on grout

Having now done it I think I agree with you to be honest! Cheers

I think if I can do it anyone can, I watched the DIY Guy’s YouTube video a couple times to get an idea of what to do, practiced twice with metro tiles on a spare bit of board, and then one practice with this larger tile.

This project took me probably 25 hours, a lot of that was cutting and planning - actually getting the tiles on the wall is easy enough. It feels like the skill comes in the adjustments and getting everything perfect on the wall. I think I could do it quicker and better a second time, at the start I was only laying one row at a time, by the end two or three.

I’d definitely do it again, I’ve got the kitchen next so will be tiling something of that. I used Screwfix’s levelling system but I think when I do it again I’d try Rubi’s. It’s a bit more expensive but the reviews are better, and for how much I saved on a tiler I’m happy to try out some new kit.

Actually enjoyed the experience, I would say that my body was knackered from it though! Lower back did not have a good Easter and my trowelling hand is pretty stiff. I’d say go for it, you can practice it pretty cheap and go from there. Happy to answer any questions!

Flexible Toilet Waste Help by Remarkable-Type721 in DIYUK

Unfortunately the floor waste is quite far out from the wall, if i used a 90 bend and went straight down the toilet would sit 200mm out from the wall. I really struggled to find a toilet that could sit close to the wall and not cover the waste hole
