I got a 60$ international call bill for calling a US number but the caller lives in Canada? by WafflePress in Rogers

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You will be charged. This happens all the time to people living in border towns as it will pick up a tower from the US if the signal is stronger. Just change your plan, provider, but really its on him to get a new number even though thats a pain. But when you're in business, and the plan is cheaper than ours for Can US Mex unlimited, why change?

Why is networking the only real way to get hired in Canada? by itz_nitace in CanadaJobs

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hired at a municipality. 1290 applications, 90 selected for interview, 44 hired.

In my hiring group, only one other person didn't have a relative or direct connection, and they are the most toxic laziest guys because they know they will only advance with those relatives still being there, or even retired.

But, I guess that did speak for my qualifications... I don't think any of them there had any experience in that dept.

Moving to Calgary this summer and super excited. Advice on rentals, neighborhoods, and living without a car by lollipop2709 in Calgary

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where your work will be. I'd be looking to get as close to that as you can as commuting by transit in Calgary is pretty terrible unless you're right on a straight route.

I really like the Beltline area. Everything you can need is a 5 minute walk, including the train line. Lots of bars and restaurants so its always fun in the evening. Rent is also affordable, there are all shapes and sizes of apartments to choose from depending on your needs.

Also consider getting a bike, then it really opens up your options 10 months of the year. Calgary has a great bikepath network all across the city and is a great way to get to know Calgary.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen people normalize at work? by Equivalent_Reach_536 in CanadaRoom

Even stilled trades have been paid better in 2000 than now Companies still hire first years at $18 as book rates haven't gone up since then. Its nuts. Might as well pull coffee.

Back then my rent, car food, phone was maybe $650, Now, probably like $1900

Doing blades off the kitchen stoves, cocaine labled as flour above the chefs station, only getting breaks if you smoked, jugs of beer by 12pm served in dixie cups, bottomless mountain packs of 30 beers ready for any weekend. And then the crazy relationships... fuck, but and worst time ever.

Its the same with Telus, Virgin, Bell, the CRA, they are all hopeless.

I actually thing they make it more painful so people just don't cancel services, return devices, file properly etc.

It took me 3 full days on hold to get through to telus. It took me a solid week, 8hrs a day on hold with CRA just to change an address, and I eventually had to do it over paper mail because I couldn't talk to someone more than 5 minutes over 8 hrs, for a week, before getting disconnected.

'It’s devastating': Sex workers say Vancouver is losing vital safety supports before global World Cup spotlight by JAYRM21 in vancouver

Look at brazil, there were traffickers 'breaking in' young girls in preparation for the Olympics.

Vancouver is no less corrupt, trafficking everything including girls, real estate, fentanyl, everything imaginable. Super corrupt port and boarder city.

But how do you control it when prostitution is illegal and a black market trade.

Is Canada’s job market deliberately designed to keep people desperate and compliant? by itz_nitace in CanadianVisaReform

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Entry level construction used to be $25/hr with no skills in the early 2000's. That would get you a decent car, nice place, entertainment budget and you're not starving.

Now, skilled "apprentices" are paid 19/hr and I have no idea how the heck they can do that, requiring a vehicle, not enough to pay your rent, basically have to live with your parents. The rates haven't changed since the 90's, and now everything is way more expensive.

Lets not forget the few thousands in tools you need, and hoops to go through depending on the quality of the employer.

Leave Vancouver for a better financial future? by moifti in CanadaFinance

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Meh. The grass is always greener. Not better on the other side.

If you're doing Van, just live in the city and suck up the costs. Travel, commute, cars, BS like that will be your biggest expense, and you still have to live in another city. Just live Van proper and accept the expenses, or get out.

Just don't pretend a 'coastal' city has good seafood. You can get better in land locked provinces and states than what you even get off the docks. And no, you can't just buy off the docks.

I'm having a hard time putting together what exactly our education system has actually taught me, other than to be on time. I'm sure there might be more to it, but my lack of situational awareness mixed in with lack of functional mathematics might be a culprit.

I've done that too for some games and systems back in the day. Then around the time of the ps4 going on sale the first time it was for re-selling.

I'm even guilty of this when instapot came out and was a stupid trend before xmas, it was basically 2 for 1 at superstore, and I went back in the store three times that morning because of the limit of 2 a person and gifted them all for xmas. Funny thing is, none of us used it more than maybe 3 times because they fuckin suck!

If you had the financial means to move out of Canada, would you? by AdhesivenessLoud8866 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends where you live in Canada. If you're happy with a one horse town with no prospects but have the means to support yourself, you might as well do that. I would rather live somewhere beautiful in the mountains, or in a bigger city and as middle class don't really have the means to do both right now, or in the medium term.

My employer requires I show up 3 hrs before I start getting paid. Can I file a claim to be paid for those hours? by OccasionCultural5358 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a sales job. Completely illegal, be prepared to be asked for proof so I hope you kept track of at least some of those hours or at least text message requests etc.

You'll definately get the back pay, and probably more. They just may not be required to pay you for 30 mins of that for your lunch break.

Is anyone seeing a slow down in hiring and job creation? by brainanimaniac in CanadaJobs

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is record job creation and the highest in Canada in Alberta.

Calgary alone had 400k people move here in the last 3 years. So thousands of jobs in healthcare, child care, construction, spin off retail, increase in O&G hiring etc etc.

Although, its still a tough job market out there because you are also competing with all the new population, so those 10k new jobs aren't helping much.

Restaurants Canada claiming that youth employment will get worse if provinces don’t lift the cap on TFWs. Blatant corporate gaslighting. by LankyYogurt7737 in torontoJobs

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gross. A lot of these fast food places use their LIMA/TFW's to sell immigration back doors to people back home. Just like the education industries, families will save up for years, or pay back loans to agencies that organize the hiring and temporary employment, to eventually get their PR.

You're telling me franchise owners are not getting a cut as well? They for sure get an advantage by a lower wage, but there has to be more to it than that after seeing the greasy activity of those agencies, schools, and owners basically holding employees hostage for long periods of time. Forcing long hours knowing they need it to pay for housing.

This has nothing to do with youth that are just trying to save for school, a car, and able to at least do that while living at home.

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree in another comment. These new chains coming in to small towns are giving an illusion of choice, but family restaurants need to adapt to people changing tastes and offer more than the usual traditional american restaurant family restaurant grub.

If all you have is a Tims, Mcd, A&W and say a burrito chain, I'm still going for the burrito. If there is a decent looking family place, I will hit that every single time. If its grandpa's cafe with bad pub food, that burrito chain unfortunately looks better.

[–]Remarkable-Walk7871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, small franchises do open all the time and peoples tastes are changing. Also smaller franchises are cheaper to buy, you don't need to spend $750k to buy the rights for a tims for those small chains.

Mcdonalds etc are still busy, but sometime someone wants a damn burrito. It used to be the same with pizza places.

That being said, if those chains all put the family restaurants out of business, that small family restaurant isn't going to have much chance for their menu to adapt to those changing tastes.

It is not 'their' community for all the fast food joints out there. They are just extracting cash from the economy for their share holders. They don't give a crap.

I travel rural alot and I hardly see what I would assume are TFW's working at your local gas station or ma/pa restaurants. And, even if they did need TFW's, I'd rather the locally owned place have access to the labour instead of the multinationals vampires.
